Titans Win Long Jump, Pole Vault In Opening Day Of WIAC Championship

WHITEWATER, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh men's track & field team won the long jump and pole vault and scored 51 points in the first day of the WIAC Championship on Friday (Feb. 23).

The Titans sit in second place with their 51 points, following UW-La Crosse, which owns 112. UW-Eau Claire is in second after Friday's events with 45 points, while UW-Whitewater (27), UW-Stout (20), UW-Stevens Point (13), UW-Platteville (3) and UW-River Falls (2) follow in order.

Joshua Rivers (Sr. • Chicago, Ill.) won the long jump with a best mark of 7.31 meters. He was joined by Londyn Little (Jr. • Columbia, Ill.), Caleb Wright (So. • Oswego, Ill.) and Charlie Nolan (So. • Normal, Ill.) in the top-eight. Little jumped 7.22 meters for second, Wright took third with a 7.16-meter distance and Nolan finished sixth by jumping 6.94 meters.

Zach Zirgibel (Jr. • Merton) won the pole vault by vaulting 4.87 meters.

The Titans also finished in the top-eight in the shot put and 400-meter dash. Isaiah Isom (So. • Lansing, Ill.) took fifth in the shot put with a 16.48-meter cast. Devin Williams (So. • Oshkosh) took sixth in the 400-meter dash in 49.86 seconds, followed by Rashaad Henderson (Sr. • Racine) in seventh in 49.90 seconds and Lucas Koerselman (Fr. • West Des Moines, Iowa) in eighth in 49.97 seconds.

The heptathlon completed four of the 10 events on Friday. Payton White (Sr. • Berrien Springs, Mich.) scored 2,769 points to sit second, Cole Spanbauer (So. • Oshkosh) sits third with 2,755 points, Cavan Dobberstein (Fr. • Manawa) sits fifth with 2,715 points and Matthew Ewens (So. • New Berlin) sits seventh with 2,675 points. Ewens won the high jump with a 1.96-meter height and Dobberstein won the long jump with a best mark of 6.85 meters.

Four Titans will run in the 60-meter dash finals tomorrow after Davian Willems (So. • De Pere), Danny Vinson (Jr. • Berrien Springs, Mich.), Joey Kean (Sr. • Middleton) and Ray Talbert (Jr. • Waterloo, Iowa) all qualified through the preliminary round.

Aden Sears (Jr. • Eureka, Ill.) and Nolan placed in the top-eight in the 60-meter hurdles preliminary rounds to advance to the final round as well.

The Titans will return to the track for the second and final day of the WIAC Championship tomorrow at 10 a.m.
