Brantley Named Max Sparger Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete

MADISON, Wis.- Jamyle Brantley was named the 2023 Max Sparger Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete on Monday. Greg Matzek (2000) and Joe Zack (2018) are previous award winners from UW-Oshkosh.
 
A senior from Green Bay, Brantley is majoring in physical education (K-12) and maintains a 3.59 grade point average. He is a four-time member of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team and the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Brantley has received Dean's List and Honor Roll distinction from UW-Oshkosh multiple semesters.
 
A team captain this season, Brantley is a three-time All-Region honoree in the long jump and secured All-America recognition in 2020. He won the long jump at the 2020 WIAC championship with a mark of 23-9 1/2 that ranks second in program history. A year ago, Brantley helped the Titans secure their first conference championship since 2001.
 
Brantley has volunteered with a food pantry, as well as several programs at local elementary schools. He has served as an intramural referee, and a media and content representative for UW-Oshkosh Athletics. Brantley is student teaching full-time this semester, and has worked as a shift leader at restaurants.
 
Also nominated for this year's scholar-athlete award were:  UW-Eau Claire's Zach Yengo (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis./Regis); UW-La Crosse's Cameron Sorenson (Sr., Oshkosh, Wis./North); UW-Platteville's Dane Jankiewicz (Sr., Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere); UW-River Falls' Brooks Lueck (Sr., Mazomanie, Wis./Wisconsin Heights); UW-Stevens Point's Austin Kopp (Sr., Mosinee, Wis./D.C. Everest); UW-Stout's Matthew Ryan (Grad., Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine); and UW-Whitewater's Chris Bitz (Jr., Brookfield, Wis./East).
 
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference for 22 years from 1971-93. He oversaw the transition of the conference from NAIA to full NCAA membership. Sparger arrived at UW-Stout in 1959 and served the institution in a variety of capacities, including an assistant football and basketball coach, head wrestling coach and head football coach. He served as UW-Stout's athletics director from 1969-71 and was inducted into the WIAC Hall of Fame in 2012.
 
In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, he must be in his last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years. The award is based on academic achievements, athletics accomplishments and involvement in other campus activities, organizations and community service projects.
