Titans Ranked First In Seven Events For WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh possesses the top seed in seven of the 21 events to be contested at this weekend's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship (presented by Culver's) in River Falls.

Competition at the 102nd edition of the championship begins at 1 p.m. Friday (May 7) and 10:15 a.m. Saturday (May 8) at UW-River Falls' David A. Smith Stadium at Ramer Field. The meet will be held in unison with the 49th version of the women's championship. Both championships were canceled in 2020 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

UW-Oshkosh, a six-time WIAC champion, has finished among the top three teams during seven of the last 10 championships held. The Titans, who scored 138 points to place second at the 2019 championship in Platteville, captured conference titles in 1927, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1971 and 1990.

UW-La Crosse scored 184 points to win the team title at the 2019 Championship. It was the Eagles' 29th straight victory at the league meet and 55th overall.

Following second-place UW-Oshkosh in the 2019 team standings were third-place UW-Eau Claire with 114 points, fourth-place UW-Whitewater with 104.5, fifth-place UW-Platteville with 94.5, sixth-place UW-Stevens Point with 94, seventh-place UW-Stout with 88 and eighth-place UW-River Falls with two.

UW-Oshkosh ranks second behind UW-La Crosse with six league titles, while UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater own four apiece and UW-Stout one. Former conference member UW-Milwaukee has 34 first-place finishes.

This weekend's conference championship features seven programs ranked in the Top 22 of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's NCAA Division III Rating Index – second-ranked UW-La Crosse, fourth-ranked UW-Oshkosh, sixth-ranked UW-Eau Claire, seventh-ranked UW-Stout, 10th-ranked UW-Whitewater, 16th-ranked UW-Stevens Point and 22nd-ranked UW-Platteville.

Traveling to River Falls with a top seed in their custody are UW-Oshkosh's Mitchell Bradford in the 5,000-meter run, John Ford in 400-meter hurdles, Andrew George in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Steven Potter in the 800-meter run, Joshua Rivers in the long jump and Jonathan Wilburn in the triple jump. Bradford, Ford and Rivers are all freshmen.

Bradford owns a time of 14:39.89 in the 5,000-meter run that ranks 25th nationally while Ford has a time of 54.78 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles that ranks 22nd and Rivers a measurement of 24-0 3/4 in the long jump that ranks fifth. Rivers is also seeded fifth in the high jump with a height of 6-4 3/4.

George holds a time of 9:07.68 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase that ranks third in the country. He is also seeded fifth in the 1,500-meter run for this weekend's meet with a time of 3:54.63. George finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2019 championship with a time of 9:21.79.

Potter possesses a time of 1:52.01 in the 800-meter run that ranks 14th in the nation. He is also seeded second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:52.63 that ranks 11th in the country. Potter finished fourth in the 800- and fifth in the 1,500-meter runs at the 2019 conference meet with times of 1:54.41 and 3:56.38, respectively.

Wilburn has a measurement of 49-4 1/2 in the triple jump that ranks second nationally. He finished second in the event at the 2019 league championship with a skip of 49-1 1/2.

UW-Oshkosh's 1,600-meter relay unit is seeded first for this weekend's meet with a time of 3:12.79 that ranks third nationally. The Titans are seeded second in the 400-meter relay with a time of 40.95 seconds that lists third in the country.

In addition to Rivers, UW-Oshkosh has three other top-eight seeds in the long jump – third-seeded Jamyle Brantley with a distance of 23-8 that ranks 10th nationally, fourth-seeded Roman Hill with a leap of 22-8 and eighth-seeded Aaron McCarroll-Richardson with a mark of 22-7. Brantley was a third-place finisher in the long jump at the 2019 championship with a flight of 22-7 1/4. McCarroll-Richardson is also seeded sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.83 seconds. He was eighth in the 100-meter dash at the 2019 conference meet with a time of 10.84 seconds.

UW-Oshkosh's Jackson Sheckler is seeded second in the shot put with a throw of 55-6 1/2 that ranks eighth nationally and Jack Flynn third in the discus with a cast of 167-1 that ranks seventh. Flynn finished second in the discus at the 2019 championship with a measurement of 162-6 and sixth at both the 2017 and 2018 meets with distances of 155-9 and 161-6, respectively.

Other fourth seeds for the Titans are Jaylen Grant in the 100-meter dash and Nick Tegtmeier in the shot put. Grant owns a time of 10.60 seconds in the 100-meter dash that ranks sixth nationally while Tegtmeier holds a throw of 53-1 1/2 that ranks 13th. Tegtmeier finished second in the shot put at the 2019 championship with a toss of 53-5.

UW-Oshkosh's Robert Ogbuli is seeded fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.72 seconds that ranks 19th nationally. He placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.69 seconds and eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.02 seconds while running a leg on UW-Oshkosh's victorious 400-meter relay team that posted a time of 41.06 seconds at the 2019 championship. Ogbuli also helped the Titans register a fourth-place time of 42.11 seconds in the 400-meter relay at the 2018 championship.

Titan Todd Beadle is seeded seventh in the 400-meter run with a time of 48.96 seconds. He finished eighth in the event with a time of 49.21 seconds while running a leg on UW-Oshkosh's 1,600-meter relay team that finished fifth with a time of 3:18.53 at the 2019 championship. In 2018, Beadle finished sixth in the 400-meter run at the league meet with a time of 49.36 seconds while running a leg on the Titans' seventh-place 1,600-meter relay team that posted a time of 3:22.41. At the 2017 championship, Beadle was a member UW-Oshkosh's second-place 400- and third-place 1,600-meter relay teams that earned times of 41.71 seconds and 3:18.47, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh freshman Ryan Potter is seeded sixth in the 400-meter run with a time of 48.93 seconds while Titan Andrew Rathkamp is seeded eighth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00.27.

Amitai Wheat is expected run on the Titans' 1,600-meter relay team this weekend. He joined Beadle on the 2019 1,600-meter relay squad that placed fifth at the conference meet.

Returning individual champions from the 2019 WIAC Championship are UW-La Crosse's Charlie Handrick in the 400-meter hurdles and Samuel Sadowski in the long jump, UW-Platteville's Alex Walechka in the discus, UW-Stevens Point's Tom Kohn in the triple jump, and UW-Whitewater's David Fassbender in the 10,000-meter run.

The top finisher in each event receives all-conference first team status while the runner-up secures second team accolades and the third-place performer honorable mention recognition.
