Titans Finish Third At Cardinal Opener

The UW-Oshkosh men's track & field team won five events in finishing third at the North Central College Cardinal Opener on Friday (Jan. 22) in Naperville, Ill.

North Central College captured the team title with 179 points, while UW-Whitewater placed second with 157, UW-Oshkosh third with 130, Carthage College fourth with 61, St. Norbert College fifth with 37 and Wheaton College (Ill.) sixth with 32.

UW-Oshkosh entered the meet ranked second in the NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, North Central College third and UW-Whitewater 11th.

The Titans claimed four of their victories on the track, including the 60-meter hurdles, where they owned three of the top four performers.

UW-Oshkosh's Morgan Malm won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 6.65 seconds while Garrison Griest finished second in 8.66 and Tyler Brown fourth in 8.70.

Other winners on the track for the Titans were Wal Khat, Brian McKnight and Ryan Powers. Khat won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.23, McKnight won the 3,000-meter run in 8:58.83 and Powers the 400-meter run in 50.35 seconds.

Zachary Baehman earned UW-Oshkosh's remaining victory with a measurement of 54-7 1/2 in the shot put. He also placed fifth in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 49-1.

Also finishing second for the Titans were Naji Allan in the 60-meter dash and Hunter Effa in the long jump. Allan ran to a time of 6.91 seconds while Effa leaped to a mark of 21-8 3/4.

Other top contributors for UW-Oshkosh Ryan Paulick with his third-place distance of 52-1 in the shot put and Jared Benson with his fourth-place skip of 39-7 3/4 in the triple jump.

In addition to Baehman, UW-Oshkosh received fifth-place efforts from Bailey Gesteland, Bryce Mancheski, Nolan Peterson and Danny Trimner.

Gesteland ran to a time of 23.54 seconds in the 200-meter dash, Peterson went 7.15 seconds in the 60-meter dash and Trimner 51.14 seconds in the 400-meter run. Mancheski leaped to a measurement of 20-10 in the long jump.

The Titans' Daniel Massey finished sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.62, while Jack Prescott and Carson Weber finished seventh with performances of 23.76 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 5-11 1/2 in the high jump, respectively.

Four Titans finished eighth as Effa ran to a time of 7.23 seconds in the 60-meter dash, Ben Garski went 23.78 seconds in the 200-meter dash and Ken Peters 2:04.28 in the 800-meter run. Dakota Griffith rounded out the group with his height of 5-9 3/4 in the high jump.

UW-Oshkosh's 1,600-meter relay team of Brown, Powers, Prescott and Trimner finished third with a time of 3:27.71.

The Titans compete at UW-Whitewater's Leonard Squig Converse Invitational next Friday (Jan. 29).
