Titans Finish Eighth At NCAA Indoor Championship

Zachary Baehman threw to his second consecutive All-America finish in the shot put to help UW-Oshkosh place eighth in the team standings at the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (March 13-14) in Winston-Salem, N.C.

UW-Oshkosh, a top-four finisher in each of the previous nine national indoor meets, tallied 19 points to rank eighth among the 66 teams that scored. The Titans finished third with 37.5 points at last year's championship and second with 40 points in 2013.

UW-Eau Claire scored 62 points to capture its first NCAA Division III indoor title. The Blugolds edged two-time defending champion UW-La Crosse by two points (60). The University of Mount Union (Ohio) finished third with distant 40 points, St. Olaf College (Minn.) fourth with 33 and North Central College (Ill.) fifth with 31.

Bridgewater College (Va.) and the University of Southern Maine shared sixth place with 20 points while Bates College (Maine) and UW-Whitewater went halves on ninth place with 16.

Baehman led all UW-Oshkosh individual competitors with his fourth-place distance of 58-2 1/2 in the shot put. The performance, which established a season best, followed his fifth-place finish at last year's meet. UW-Eau Claire's Roger Steen won this year's shot put title with a measurement of 61-8 1/2.

The final event of the meet, the 1,600-meter relay, featured UW-Oshkosh's highest finish.

The Titans placed second in the race as Kallen Bentz, Dan Trimner, Reid Zanoya and Brian Beaudo were nipped at the finish line with their school-record time of 3:15.99. Augustana College (Ill.) edged UW-Oshkosh for the title with its winning effort of 3:15.97. It was the third indoor All-America award for Beaudo and Zanoya in the 1,600-meter relay and the first for both Bentz and Trimner.

UW-Oshkosh's Roberto Lara collected his first All-America citation with a fifth-place finish in the mile run. Lara completed the race with a time of 4:13.83. Paul Escher of St. Olaf College won the event with a time of 4:10.19.

Lara also anchored the Titans' seventh-place distance medley relay team that posted a time of 10:03.42. Beaudo, Justin Skinkis and Joe Zack joined Lara in helping UW-Oshkosh record its second straight All-America finish in the event. UW-Eau Claire won the race with a time of 9:54.62. It was the second indoor All-America award for Beaudo in the distance medley relay and the first for Lara, Skinkis and Zack.

Other UW-Oshkosh individual competitors at the meet were Beaudo, Naji Allan and Nick Grosskopf. Grosskopf finished ninth in the shot put with a season-best mark of 55-9 3/4, while Beaudo and Allan both placed 10th with performances of 49.48 seconds in the 400-meter run and 6.92 seconds in the 60-meter dash, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh, which captured the 2009 NCAA Division III indoor title, opens its outdoor season at the UW-Whitewater Invitational on April 3.
