Titans Win Eight Events At WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh owned the winner in eight events as it finished second at the WIAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (May 4-5) in La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse scored 223 points to capture its 23rd straight title and 49th overall. UW-Oshkosh counted 206 points, including 34 in the shot put and 27 in the discus, to finish second at the meet for the fourth consecutive year.

UW-Eau Claire and UW-Platteville shared third place in the nine-team meet with 110 points, while UW-Whitewater finished fifth with 90, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout sixth with 42, UW-River Falls eighth with 31 and UW-Superior ninth with 4.

The Titans took the six of the top seven places in the shot put. Nick Baatz (Sr. • Brownsville) threw to a distance of 59-1 1/4 to win the event for the second straight year, while Nick Grosskopf (So. • Weston) finished second at 56-9 1/4, Lewis Prior (Sr. • Coleman) third at 56-5 3/4, Pete Delzer (Sr. • Oconto Falls) fourth at 55-11 3/4, Zachary Baehman (Fr. • Omro) sixth at 54-9 1/2 and Jeremy Brandt (Jr. • Wausau) seventh at 53-0.

In the discus, UW-Oshkosh earned five of the top seven performances. Prior, who also won the event in 2011, took first place with a school-record measurement of 182-4. Baatz finished third with a mark of 169-6, while Delzer placed fourth at 158-6, Scott Heinz (So. • Shawano) fifth at 157-1 and Brandt seventh at 151-2.

UW-Oshkosh tallied 25 points in the hammer throw as Delzer successfully defended his title with a winning distance of 182-3. Baatz finished second with a toss of 181-9, while Joe Brunner (Jr. • Reedsville) placed fifth at 175-7, Prior seventh at 173-0 and Grosskopf eighth at 168-10.

UW-Oshkosh's Corey Wilch (Jr. • Waukesha) was a repeat winner in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.38. He also posted a sixth-place effort of 15.04 in the 110-meter hurdles while running on the Titans' first-place 1,600-meter relay team. Wilch and teammates Brian Beaudo (So. • Fort Atkinson), Mike Servais (Fr. • New Franken) and Reid Zanoya (So. • Monticello) ran to a time of 3:15.40.

UW-Oshkosh athletes will compete in a variety of last chance meets before participating at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship on May 23-25 in La Crosse.
