Titans Throw Their Way To An Invitational Title

UW-Oshkosh totaled 76 points in three throwing events as it captured a first-place finish at the UW-Platteville Men's Track & Field Invitational held Saturday (April 13) in Platteville.

The Titans won the 11-team meet with 160 points, while UW-La Crosse finished second with 152.5, UW-Platteville third with 110.5, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 94 and UW-Whitewater fifth with 93.

UW-Oshkosh scored 27 points in the hammer throw as Pete Delzer (Sr. • Oconto Falls) took first with a distance of 189-2, Joe Brunner (So. • Reedsville) second at 180-2, Lewis Prior (Sr. • Coleman) fourth at 172-7, Nick Baatz (Sr. • Brownsville) sixth at 170-6 and Nick Grosskopf (So. • Weston) eighth at 165-0.

The Titans tallied 25 points in the shot put as Baatz placed first with a mark of 55-2, Delzer second at 54-10, Zachary Baehman (Fr. • Omro) fifth at 5-7 3/4, Grosskopf seventh at 50-6 and Jeremy Brandt (Jr. • Wausau) eighth at 50-4.

The discus contributed 24 points to UW-Oshkosh's overall score. Baatz won the event with a measurement of 162-8, while Prior ranked second at 161-9, Scott Heinz (So. • Shawano) fifth at 153-1 and Mike Heinz (So. • Shawano) seventh at 145-6.

UW-Oshkosh's other individual winner was John McCann (Jr. • Elroy). He won the high jump with a leap of 6-9 3/4.

Adding second-place results for the Titans were Jake Dickmann (Sr. • Kewaskum) with a height of 16-0 in the pole vault, Donald Klitz (Sr. • Markesan) with a leap of 6-8 3/4 in the high jump and Lee Robinson (So. • Racine) with a skip of 44-10 3/4 in the triple jump.

Ryan Sprenger (Jr. • Larsen) gave UW-Oshkosh points in two events after finishing third in the long jump with a distance of 22-11 and fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.24.

Other fourth-place finishes went to the Titans' John Block (Jr. • Madison) in the 1,500-meter run (4:05.74) and Reid Zanoya (So. • Monticello) in the 400-meter dash (49.78). Additional fifth-place listings went to UW-Oshkosh's Naji Allan (Fr. • Sheboygan) in the 100-meter dash and John Dewitt (Sr. • Oshkosh) in the 5,000-meter run (14:47.87).

UW-Oshkosh had three other sixth-place finishers as Jonathan Jordan (Jr. • Milwaukee) leaped 22-6 1/2 in the long jump, Frank O'Neal (Sr. • Viroqua) ran to a time of 58.44 in the 400-meter hurdles and Jamel Robertson (Fr. • Green Bay) hopped to a distance of 42-9 3/4 in the triple jump.

The Titans' Kyle Schueller (Fr. • Edgar) added a seventh-place mark of 22-1 in the long jump.

In the relays, UW-Oshkosh's 400-meter group of Allan, Schueller, Sprenger and Zanoya finished third with a time of 42.78. The Titans' 1,600-meter squad of O'Neal, Ryan Gregory (So. • Mahtomedi, Minn.), Brian Huebner (Fr. • Green Bay) and Mike Servais (Fr. • New Franken) placed fourth with a time of 3:20.78.

Next weekend (April 18-20), UW-Oshkosh will send athletes to the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., Brian Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., and the Phil Esten Challenge in La Crosse.
