Titans Edged For WIAC Outdoor Title

UW-Oshkosh came within one point of winning the team title at the WIAC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (May 6-7) in Platteville.

The Titans compiled 174 points, including 24 in the discus and 19 in the shot put, but UW-La Crosse scored 175 to capture its 21st straight crown. UW-Whitewater placed third in the nine-team meet with 140 points, while UW-Stevens Point finished fourth with 103, UW-Platteville fifth with 98, UW-Eau Claire sixth with 69.5, UW-Stout seventh with 58, UW-River Falls eighth with 39.5 and UW-Superior ninth with one.

Tony Baker (Sr. • Oshkosh) won the hammer throw with a distance of 190-7, while Lewis Prior (Jr. • Coleman) captured the discus competition with a toss of 171-4. In the 400-meter hurdles, Chris Lipke (Sr. • Wautoma) blew away the field with a time of 53.37.

UW-Oshkosh’s final victory came in the 400-meter relay as Quentin Badger (Fr. • Madison), John Cejka (So. • Wausau), Alex DeWitt (So. • Howard) and Ryan Sprenger (Fr. • Larsen) ran to a time of 41.74.

The Titans continued their throwing dominance in the discus with Baker’s second-place mark of 170-7 and Nick Baatz’s (So. • Brownsville) third-place figure of 167-1. Baker also took second in the shot put at 56-10, while Baatz followed in third place with a throw of 54-4. Pete Delzer (So. • Oconto Falls) tacked on a fourth-place distance (53-10) in the shot put, as did Ben Ludtke (Jr. • Lyons) in the hammer throw (176-8).

Badger continued the second-place scores in the 200-meter dash with his time of 21.48. John McCann (Fr. • Elroy) leaped 6-7 in the high jump and Alan German (Jr. • West Bend) launched the javelin 176-10 to each earn silver medals.

UW-Oshkosh picked up other third-place results from Badger in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.62, Corey Wilch (Fr. • Waukesha) in the 400-meter hurdles at 54.57 and Tyler Morey (Jr. • Combined Locks) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:24.59.

Nate Stymiest (Jr. • Oconto Falls) posted a fourth-place showing in the 1,500-meter run with a clocking of 3:57.63. The Titans then received two fifth-place standings from German in the 100-meter hurdles (15.18) and the long jump (23-0). Other athletes taking fifth were Jake Dickmann (So. • Kewaskum) in the pole vault with a height of 15-3, Donald Klitz (So. • Markesan) in the triple jump with a distance of 46-9 and Chris Lipke (Sr. • Wautoma) with a javelin toss of 163-9.

UW-Oshkosh obtained six finishes of sixth place. Brett DeNure (So. • Monroe) got things started in the 800-meter run with his 1:55.24, while John Dewitt’s (So. • Oshkosh) 10,000-meter time of 31:35.76 and David Edwards’ (Sr. • Waterford) 400-meter hurdles mark of 55.59 also contributed.

Delzer launched the discus 161-2 and the hammer 172-10 for a pair of sixth-place results. Other finishes of sixth came from the 9:28.51 time by Stymiest in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and a pole vault height of 15-3 by Cesar Raygoza (So. • Sheboygan).

Providing seventh-place scores for UW-Oshkosh were Cejka in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.63 and the 3,200-meter relay of John Block (Fr. • Madison), Kenny Halloran (Fr. • Mt. Prospect, Ill.), Matt Champan (Fr. • Waukesha) and Matt Lawrence (Fr. • Plainfield, Ill.) with their mark of 7:54.12. Ryan Fosler (Jr. • DeForest) rounded out the finishes by taking seventh in both the 100-meter hurdles (15.22) and the javelin (157-4).

The Titans will compete at several Last Chance Meets before participating at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship on May 26-28 in Delaware, Ohio.
