Titans Drop Close Decisions To Flying Dutch, Pipers

Kevin Lewis (So. • Howard) won twice in both singles and doubles play as UW-Oshkosh was on the short end of 5-4 men's tennis scores against Hope College (Mich.) and Hamline University (Minn.) on Thursday (March 22) in Orlando, Fla.

Lewis was one of three UW-Oshkosh individual winners against Hope College (4-5), with the others being Aidan Sauberlich (Fr. • Green Bay) and Jason Alexander (So. • Fond du Lac). Lewis defeated Parker Bussies, 6-3, 6-3, in the second flight, while Sauberlich ousted Gabe Casher, 6-3, 6-4, in the third. Alexander won on an injury default in the fourth flight.

UW-Oshkosh (6-9) took the No. 1 doubles contest against the Flying Dutch as Lewis and Bobby Brooks (So. • Neenah) topped Casher and Bobby Cawood, 8-2.

Winning singles contests for Hope College were Cawood in the first flight, Davis Vanderveen in the fifth and Grant Shooter in the sixth. Cawood defeated Brooks, 6-2, 6-3, while Vanderveen edged Adam Kasper (Jr. • Franklin), 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Shooter won on a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Josh Hopfensperger (So. • Neenah).

In doubles action, Hope College owned the winner in the second and third flights. At No. 2 doubles, Vanderveen and Kyle Kreps trimmed Kasper and Sauberlich, 9-8. Bussies and Matt Culver won at No. 3 doubles by an 8-2 result over Alexander and Hopfensperger.

Lewis accounted for a pair of UW-Oshkosh team points against Hamline University (5-5). He crushed Robert Becker, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and then teamed with Brooks to beat Becker and David Croonquist, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.

UW-Oshkosh picked up its remaining two victories from Brooks at No. 1 singles and Hopfensperger and Scott Niemi (Sr. • Appleton) at No. 3 doubles. Brooks slipped past Croonquist, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, while Hopfensperger and Niemi downed Brendan Fitzpatrick and Sam Teitelbaum, 8-4.

Hamline University got individual wins from Bernard Mitambo in the third flight, Teitelbaum in the fourth, Andrew Lutz in the fifth and Derek Lutz in the sixth. Mitambo defeated Sauberlich, 6-4, 6-0, while Teitelbaum conquered Alexander, 7-6, 6-2. Andrew Lutz had a 7-5, 6-0 win over Hopfensperger and Derek Lutz a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Kinan Al-Bitar (So. • Oshkosh).

The Pipers' lone doubles victory came in the second flight as Mitambo and Andrew Lutz defeated Kasper and Sauberlich, 8-4.

UW-Oshkosh visits Carroll University next Friday (March 30).
