Titans To Participate At WIAC Championship

Members of the UW-Oshkosh men's swimming & diving team look to record their best performances of the season when they compete at this weekend's WIAC Championship in Brown Deer.

Competition at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center begins Thursday (Feb. 14) and concludes on Saturday (Feb. 16). The 51st chapter of the league event will be held in conjunction with the 42nd convention of the women's squads.

The UW-Stevens Point men claimed their 16th first-place trophy a season ago with 874 points. UW-La Crosse finished second with 753 points, UW-Whitewater third with 632, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 541, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 305 and UW-River Falls sixth with 169.

Sam Green (Fr. • Germantown), Patrick Keleny (Fr. • Madison) and Quin Lenz (Jr. • Oshkosh) lead UW-Oshkosh. Keleny ranks 12th in the conference in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events with times of 54.54 and 2:08.50. Lenz holds the 13th-fastest time in the 1,650-yard freestyle at 18:16.34, while Green ranks 15th at 18:19.42.

This year's championship features 12 individuals who have combined to win 22 first-place medals.

UW-Stevens Point's Joey Clapp has five individual and nine relay titles to his credit, and claimed the Swimmer of the Meet Award at last year's championship. He is the two-time defending champion in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. Clapp is also the defending champion in the 100-yard freestyle. 

UW-Stevens Point's Ryan Farmer won titles in the 100-yard butterfly in 2010 and 2011 and owns 11 first-place finishes in the relays. Another Pointer, Luuk Dekkers, has claimed consecutive crowns in the 500-yard freestyle. Zach Desy posted first-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard individual medley in 2010, and was a member of the Pointers' victorious 800-yard freestyle relay squad.

UW-Eau Claire's Alex Card is the defending champion in both the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. He was triumphant in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2011.
