Anderson, Devine Capture Event Titles At WIAC Championship

Phil Devine (Jr. • Winnebago, Ill.) was named Diver of the Meet for the third consecutive year as the UW-Oshkosh men's swimming and diving team placed fifth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship held this past weekend (Feb. 17-19) at the Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer.

UW-Stevens Point accumulated 945 points to claim its 12th straight WIAC title and 15th overall. UW-Eau Claire placed second with 639 points, while UW-La Crosse finished third with 622, UW-Whitewater fourth with 596, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 301 and UW-River Falls sixth with 163.

Devine dominated the diving competition by setting school and conference records in both categories. He scored 574.40 points to defeat 14 other participants in the one-meter diving and 578.90 points to oust 12 other contestants in the three-meter diving. Devine, a three-time conference champion in both diving events, is expected to represent the Titans at the NCAA Division III Championship on March 23-26 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Dalton Anderson (So. • Elkhorn) established four UW-Oshkosh records in the meet, with his first-place time of 1:52.53 in the 200-yard butterfly and second-place performance of 49.71 in the 100-yard butterfly surpassing the provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Division III Championship.

After posting a school mark with his ninth-place time of 1:56.57 in the 200-yard individual medley, Anderson kept the momentum going with his teammates. His 200-yard leg of 1:43.22 led off the Titans' 800-yard freestyle relay. Quin Lenz (Fr. • Oshkosh), Brian Markovich (Jr. • Colgate) and Jon Streich (Jr. • Hubertus) completed the record-breaking event with a fifth-place figure of 7:21.32.

Tim Kuckuk (So. • Plymouth) added to UW-Oshkosh's success in the diving competition by placing second on the one-meter board with 444.75 points and fifth on the three-meter plank with 416.15. The Titans' Alex Socha (Jr. • Pleasant Prairie) contributed an eighth-place score of 362.05 in the three-meter diving and a ninth-place value of 348.40 at one meter.

UW-Oshkosh also received a 12th-place time of 22.33 seconds from Markovich in the 50-yard freestyle.

This year's championship featured another UW-Oshkosh record as Anderson, Markovich, Eddie Dominguez (So. • Greendale) and Matt Engelhardt (So. • DeForest) swam to a fifth-place time of 1:28.09 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

UW-Stevens Point's Sam Davy was voted the Swimmer of the Meet, while UW-Eau Claire's Art Brandt was named the league's Coach of the Year. The Pointers' Matthew Olp was selected as the winner of the WIAC's Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
