Eagles Sink Titans

Matt Diehl won three events as the UW-La Crosse men's swimming and diving team registered a 162-72 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Nov. 21) in La Crosse.

Diehl won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.86 seconds, 200-yard freestyle with a performance of 1:50.62 and the 200-yard breaststroke with an effort of 2:18.92.

The Eagles also received first-place finishes from Justin Dembski in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:10.12), Benjamin Knutson in the 50-yard freestyle (22.49), Kevin Misener in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.56), Colin Schmidt in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.30) and Kurt Zehel in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.16).

UW-Oshkosh won four events, including two by Phil Devine (So. • Winnebago, Ill.). Devine won the one-meter diving with a score of 296.00 and the three-meter diving with a school-record mark of 340.10. Devine surpassed the provisional qualifying standard in both events for the 2010 NCAA Division III Championship on March 17-20 in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Titans picked up another victory when Dalton Anderson (Fr. • Elkhorn) won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.97. Anderson also swam on UW-Oshkosh's 400-yard freestyle relay team that posted a winning time of 3:28.35. Joining Anderson in the relay were Matt Engelhardt (Fr. • DeForest), Brian Markovich (So. • Colgate) and Ryan Ronayne (Fr. • Fond du Lac).

UW-La Crosse won the 400-yard medley relay as Misener, Michael Bellman, Ryan Schmidt and Bill Schuster splashed to a time of 3:49.36.

Placing second for UW-Oshkosh were Anderson in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:22.73 and Markovich in the 200-yard backstroke with a performance of 2:09.18. Markovich also finished third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.13.

The Titans' Tim Kuckuk (Fr. • Plymouth) added a pair of third-place finishes with scores of 215.10 in the one-meter diving and 237.55 in the three-meter diving.

UW-Oshkosh returns to action on Dec. 4 at the UW-River Falls Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
