Titans Conquer Warriors In Home Opener

Nick Woodbury converted a pair of long-distance shots as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College, 3-0, on Wednesday (Sept. 3) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. It was the first home game of the 2014 season for the Titans, who improved their 31-year record in home openers to 24-3-4.

Woodbury gave UW-Oshkosh a 2-0 lead when he lofted a 20-yard shot over a charging Wisconsin Lutheran College goalkeeper during the game's 44th minute (43:38). Woodbury's first goal of the season followed a pass from John Schwalbach.

UW-Oshkosh, which entered the contest ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, held its two-goal lead until Woodbury scored in the 77th minute (76:12) on a high-speed kick from 35 yards out.

JT Heidvogel opened the scoring for UW-Oshkosh (3-0) on a penalty kick in the game's 37th minute (36:36). It was the first career goal for Heidvogel.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 18 shots, including 12 in the second half, and earned all four of the game's corner kicks. The three from Schwalbach and the two each from Woodbury, Trent Allison, Elias Efthimiou and Jonathan Stanley led the Titans' shot count.

Wisconsin Lutheran College (1-2) was held to just two shots, one in each half. Teffie Joyce's kick in the 74th minute was the Warriors' lone shot on goal.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Nick Barry saved the only shot he faced. The shutout was his second and the Titans' third of the season.

Wisconsin Lutheran College goalkeeper Cedric Guichard saved seven shots and allowed all three UW-Oshkosh goals. Six of his saves came in the second period.

UW-Oshkosh welcomes The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) to J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 6). The Saints joined the Titans as a participant in last year's NCAA Division III postseason tournament.
