Titans Rally To Earn Share Of WIAC Title

With conference, regional and national bragging rights on the line, the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team rallied with a late goal in regulation and played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with UW-Whitewater on Saturday (Oct. 30) in Whitewater.

The stalemate left the long-time rivals sharing the WIAC championship with 3-0-1 league records. UW-Whitewater was the winner of last year's title, the first awarded by the WIAC, with a 3-0-1 record as well.

UW-Whitewater (12-1-3), ranked 11th in the NCAA Division III by D3soccer.com and 13th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), broke a scoreless debate on Dan Montanye's unassisted goal in the 58th minute (57:25) of play.

The Warhawks held their slim advantage until they committed a foul on UW-Oshkosh's Ryan Hanna (Fr. • Verona) in the penalty box area with 67 seconds left in regulation. The Titans' Tim Stadler (Jr. • Wauwatosa) then converted the penalty kick to send the contest to overtime. Stadler's goal was his team-leading ninth of the season.

Overtime went relatively quiet as both teams attempted just one shot in each of the two periods.

UW-Oshkosh (16-0-3), ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III by the NSCAA and 17th by D3soccer.com, finished the match with 17 shots and seven corner kicks. The Titans' shot count included the four of Devon Prideaux (Sr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.), the three of Mike Franzen (Sr. • Sussex) and the two of both Robby Giljohann (Jr. • Pewaukee) and Nick Laubenstein (Fr. • Howard).

UW-Whitewater concluded the game with 10 shots and seven corner kicks. The Warhawks were led by the four shots of Montanye and the two of Logan Frye.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper James Pike saved two shots and UW-Whitewater goalkeeper Matt Mikesell seven in the 110-minute match. The Warhawks' goal was just the fourth scored against the Titans this season.

UW-Oshkosh is idle until the 60 teams are announced for the NCAA Division III Championship on Nov. 8. Both UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater are expected to receive invitations to the single-elimination tournament.
