Titans Put Yellowjackets Away With Early Goals
UW-Oshkosh scored both goals in the first 21 minutes of play as it defeated the UW-Superior men's soccer team, 2-0, on Saturday (Oct. 9) in Superior. The shutout victory was the Titans' ninth in 10 matches and 11th of the season.
UW-Oshkosh (12-0-1/2-0 WIAC) jumped ahead of UW-Superior (7-4-1/1-1 WIAC) on Robby Giljohann's (Jr. • Pewaukee) goal just 2:19 into the contest. Giljohann's third goal of the season followed passes from Mike Franzen (Sr. • Sussex) and Tony Starnes (So. • Green Bay).
The Titans added to their lead on a goal by Devon Prideaux (Sr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.) at the 20:08 mark of the contest. Awarded assists on Prideaux's fourth goal of the season were Giljohann and Brian Miller (Sr. • Chippewa Falls).
UW-Oshkosh, ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, fired 17 shots in the match and UW-Superior eight. Both teams had four corner kick opportunities.
A total of 11 players attempted shots for UW-Oshkosh. The Titans were led by the three shots of Jesse Klein (Jr. • Burnsville, Minn.) and the two each of Giljohann, Starnes, Brandon Briones (Sr. • Menasha) and Ryan Redmond (Fr. • Lake Elmo, Minn.).
UW-Superior, which is winless in its 10 matches (0-10 record) against UW-Oshkosh, had six players attempt shots. The Yellowjackets were paced by the two shots each of Nate Engel, Thomas Shuldheisz and Dan Warnke.
James Pike (Jr. • Wauwatosa) guarded the UW-Oshkosh goal for 77:43 of play. His service featured three saves. Tim Gindville (Sr. • New Lenox, Ill.) followed Pike's duty and went without a save in 12:17.
UW-Superior goalkeeper Tom Fitzer allowed both goals and tallied four saves.
