Titans Ranked Third in Nation, First in WIAC; 2022-23 Outlook

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh Titans, ranked No. 3 in the nation by D3hoops.com are set to return to play at Kolf Sports Center for the 2022-23 season. They have also been projected to finish in first place in the WIAC in the preseason poll released by the conference. They bring back 14 returning players, including 4 starters and add 5 new players.

Head coach Matt Lewis enters his fifth season as head coach of the Titans with a 77-18 record, previously serving as an assistant for six years. He led the Titans to their 14th regular season championship last season, his second title as head coach, as well as the WIAC postseason championship. They made it to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament, winning over Blackburn College (Ill.) by a score of 92-74, before falling in the second round to Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), 74-77.

WIAC Preseason Predictions

The Titans have been predicted by the conference to finish in first place with an overall record of 23-4 and a WIAC record of 10-2.

The UW-La Crosse Eagles were voted to finished second at 21-7, 9-5 WIAC.

The rest of the field has been predicted as follows; third- UW-Platteville (22-6, 9-4 WIAC), fourth- UW-Whitewater (15-11, 7-6 WIAC), fifth- UW-River Falls (14-10, 6-7 WIAC), sixth- UW-Stout (16-9, 7-6 WIAC), seventh- UW-Eau Claire (11-15, 4-10 WIAC), eighth- UW-Stevens Point (4-17, 0-12).

2021 Honors

Returning Senior Levi Borchert was named to the NABC All-America First Team and D3hoops.com All-America Second Team; also being named the D3hoops.com NCAA Division III Region 9 Player of the Year, NABC NCAA Division III All-District 9 Player of the Year, and WIAC Player of the Year.

Hunter Plamann, another returning senior was named to the D3hoops.com NCAA Division III All-Region 9 Third Team and WIAC First Team.

Quinn Steckbauer, a third returning senior, was named to WIAC Honorable Mention. 

Fifth-year Eric Peterson was named to the WIAC All-Defensive Team.

Matt Lewis earned NCAA Division III All-District 9 Coach of the Year and WIAC Coach of the Year honors.

Looking at Returning Titans

Borchert led the Titans with a 61.9 field goal percentage and 198 field goals. He also led the Titans with an 18.1 points per game average (488) and 10.7 rebounds per game (289 total rebounds). Quinn Steckbauer led with a 40.7 3-pointer percentage last season, going 35 for 86. Jonah Rindfleisch returns owning the most blocks on the team at 23 and a blocks per game average of 0.9. Hunter Plamann led the team in assists at 4.0 per game, with 101 on the season.

Opening against Lawrence

The Titans open the season at home against Lawrence University (Wis.) on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. The Vikings finished 12-13 overall and 9-7 in the Midwest Conference last season. Sophomore Will Thomas led Lawrence last season with a .667 shooting percentage from the field. Junior Matthew Kaznikov made the most 3-pointers among Vikings shooters with 58. Kaznikov also averaged the highest points per game among returning players at 11.0. Top rebounder, Adnan Sarancic is also returning for the 2022-23 season. He grabbed a total of 183 rebounds (52 offensive), averaging 7.3 a game.

National Notes

The Titans were ranked No. 3 in the nation by D3hoops.com, also receiving two first-place votes. They follow Mary-Hardin Baylor (Tex.) who advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to eventual runners-up Elmhurst College (Ill.), and defending national champions Randolph-Macon. Fellow WIAC member UW-La Crosse has been ranked No. 15. UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater also recieved votes in the pre-season poll. The full pre-season poll can be found here.

They also received national attention from former NBA head coach and current commentator on ESPN, Jeff Van Gundy, who stopped by for a pre-season practice and made mention of his visit to Kolf Sports Center.
