Titans Advance To National Quarterfinals With Win Over Eagles

Charlie Noone led four Titan double-digit scorers with a career-high 32 points as UW-Oshkosh defeated Emory University (Ga.), 93-72, in a battle of nationally ranked teams during the third round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship on Friday (March 9) in Rock Island, Ill.

UW-Oshkosh (23-7), ranked 24th in the country by D3hoops.com, advances to the national quarterfinals for the second time in program history and first since 2003.

The Titans, who trailed for less than three minutes during the first half, took the lead for good at 21-19 on a 3-pointer from Brett Wittchow with eight minutes remaining in the opening period. UW-Oshkosh went on to build leads of 40-29 at intermission and 73-48 with 7:53 left in the second half.

UW-Oshkosh plays Saturday (March 10) against ninth-ranked Augustana College (Ill.) for the right to move on to the Division III semifinals. The opening tip for the Elite Eight matchup is set for 7 p.m. in Augustana College's Roy J. Carver Center For Physical Education. The Vikings (25-5) earned a place in the national quarterfinals with an 86-78 victory at home over 20th-ranked John Carroll University (Ohio) (25-6) on Friday.

Noone, who paced the Titans with five assists, connected on 10 of 15 shots from the floor, including 8 of 12 from 3-point range, on the way to eclipsing his previous career high of 24 points established during a 69-68 setback to UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 1, 2017. Noone scored 23 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field in the second half Friday.

Adam Fravert added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Titans, who also received 12 points, six rebounds and five assists from Ben Boots.

Wittchow contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Kyle Beyak chipped in a career-best eight points off the Titan bench.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the contest with advantages in rebounds (38-26), assists (20-16), turnovers (12-9) and steals (5-4). UW-Oshkosh, which has out-rebounded all but five of its opponents this season, entered the game seventh nationally with a +8.7 average rebounding margin. Emory University collected a season-low rebound total.

Both teams shot 50 percent from the floor as Emory University went 29-for-58 from the field and UW-Oshkosh 30-for-60. The Titans drilled 15 of 29 shots from 3-point range and converted 18 of 25 attempts at the free throw line.

Sixth-ranked Emory University (23-5) connected on 9 of 20 shots from beyond the arc and 5 of 7 at the foul line. The Eagles' five made free throws and seven attempts were both one shy of season lows.

The Eagles held their last advantage at 19-18 following a free throw by leading scorer Romin Williams with 8:18 to go in the first half. UW-Oshkosh ended the opening period with seven unanswered points, including a 3-pointer from Noone with one second left that provided the Titans a double-digit advantage they would not relinquish.

The Titans extended their run to 10 straight points as Boots drilled a 3-pointer for a 43-29 lead on UW-Oshkosh's first possession of the second half.

David Vlotho hit a 3-pointer to increase the UW-Oshkosh lead to 56-40 with 13:57 left before Noone gave the Titans their largest advantage of 25 points at 73-48 with 7:53 remaining.

Emory University cut its deficit to 13 points on two occasions with less than three minutes to play, but a pair of free throws from both Beyak and Noone extended the UW-Oshkosh lead to 91-70 with 55 seconds left.

Whitt Rapp led Emory University with a season-best 15 points to go along with 11 assists and five rebounds. Rapp, who matched his season high with five turnovers, went into the contest ranked third in the country with 7.4 assists per game and fourth with a 4.11 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Adam Gigax recorded 14 points for the Eagles while Gebereal Baitey had 10 points and two steals.

UW-Oshkosh, which sports a 10-7 record in eight NCAA postseason trips, is seeking its first trip to the national semifinals.

Augustana College, last year's Division III runner-up, has reached six Final Fours and boasts a 42-17 record in 18 national tournament appearances. The Vikings have won 62 of their last 71 contests in the Roy J. Carver Center For Physical Education.

UW-Oshkosh beat Augustana College by a 95-89 score in double-overtime Dec. 2 in Oshkosh.
