Green Knights Spoil Titans' Season Opener

St. Norbert College ended the first half with a 19-5 scoring run to pull away and defeat the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team, 67-50, in the season opener for both squads on Saturday (Nov.15) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh trimmed the Green Knights' lead to 17-16 on a basket by AJ Mueller with 7:29 left in the opening period, but St. Norbert College made nine of its next 11 shots from the field to take a 36-21 advantage to intermission. The Titans closed the first half with 2-of-11 shooting from the field.

St. Norbert College, which compiled a 25-2 record while advancing to the second round of last year's NCAA Division III Championship, scored the first four points of its game with UW-Oshkosh. The Titans rallied to take a 14-10 lead, but seven straight points by the Green Knights gave them a 17-14 advantage.

St. Norbert College opened a 43-28 lead early in the second half, but a three-pointer by Sean Dwyer and lay-ups by Max Schebel and Kyle Bolger cut UW-Oshkosh's deficit to 43-35 with 14:06 remaining.

The Green Knights (1-0) answered the UW-Oshkosh charge with five straight points, building a double-digit lead that they would hold the rest of the way. The game's final score matched St. Norbert College's largest lead of the contest.

Mueller paced UW-Oshkosh (0-1) in scoring with a career-high 17 points. He also grabbed five rebounds and recorded two steals. The Titans also received 12 points and three steals from Alex Olson and a career-best 10 points from Dwyer. Nick Olson and Bolger led UW-Oshkosh with seven rebounds and five assists, respectively.

St. Norbert College's Andrew Schwoerer led all players with 20 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Steven Hofacker added 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and a school-record nine blocks. Austin Elliott chipped in with nine points and a game-best six assists.

UW-Oshkosh posted shooting percentages of 35.2 (19-for-54) from the field and 60 (6-for-10) from the free-throw line. The Titans made six of their 21 three-point shots (28.6 percent).

St. Norbert College, which was UW-Oshkosh's season-opening opponent for the eighth straight year, shot 56.3 percent (27-for-48) from the field and 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from the free-throw stripe. The Green Knights were 5-of-7 shooting (71.4 percent) behind the three-point arc.

St. Norbert College tallied a 35-25 rebounding advantage.

The Titans travel to Madison for a game against Edgewood College on Tuesday (Nov. 18).
