Royston Leads Titans Past Eagles In Overtime

 

Jade Royston (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells) scored 13 of his career-high 26 points in overtime as UW-Oshkosh defeated the Edgewood College men's basketball team, 64-54, on Saturday (Nov. 17) in Wisconsin Dells.

UW-Oshkosh (1-2), which snapped an 18-game losing streak, took control after converting its four shots of overtime. Royston, who also tallied four rebounds and two assists, made four of his five shots and all four free throws during the five-minute extra session.

With 1:18 left in the second half, UW-Oshkosh's Andre Wallace (Fr. • Sun Prairie) sank a pair of free throws to make it 47-47 for the 11th tie of the game. Sean Wise (Sr. • Wautoma) and Royston then scored buckets early in overtime to give the Titans the lead. A Royston three-pointer with 3:38 on the clock put UW-Oshkosh ahead, 54-49.

Royston had a pair of three-point plays and two more free throws during the period. UW-Oshkosh finished with 6-of-7 shooting in overtime, while Edgewood College made two of its three field-goal attempts.

The Eagles (0-2) started the game strong, using a Craig Cashton three-pointer and Joe Klocek's jumper to take a 7-0 lead.

UW-Oshkosh didn't score for five minutes before rattling off eight straight points. Consecutive three-pointers from Cory Nickel (Jr. • Waupun) put the Titans on top, 8-7, with 11:41 remaining in the half.

For the last 12 minutes of the period, the teams were within four points of each other. Alex Evans (So. • Fennimore) made a lay-up just before the break to make it a 24-20 Edgewood College lead at halftime.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Klocek and Brett Meinecke put the Eagles up, 30-24. The Titans then charged with a 9-0 scoring run that featured six points by Royston and a deep jumper from Dylan Wurtz (Jr. • Kimberly).

Another Wurtz connection from long distance gave UW-Oshkosh a 40-37 lead with five minutes to play. Cashton drained a pair of shots behind the arc in the last four minutes to help force overtime.

UW-Oshkosh finished the contest shooting percentages of 43.4 (23-53) from the field, 27.8 (5-18) behind the three-point line and 81.3 (13-16) from the free-throw line. Wise and Wurtz both contributed 10 points while Nickel and Wallace grabbed five rebounds apiece.

Edgewood College received 15 points from Cashton and 11 from Klocek. The Eagles also obtained nine points and six rebounds from Justin Williams.

Edgewood College shot 33.3 percent (18-54) from the field, including 35.3 (6-17) behind the three-point arc. The Eagles made just 12 of their 22 free throws (54.5 percent).

UW-Oshkosh is off until it visits Augustana College (Ill.) on Nov. 29.
