Bio

Craig Stenbroten returns for his 15th season as a full-time member of the UW-Oshkosh coaching staff in 2023. Stenbroten, who served as a part-time assistant from 2006-07, begins his seventh season as the Titans’ defensive coordinator. The 2020 season was canceled due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Since becoming UW-Oshkosh defensive coordinator, Stenbroten has coached four Titans defensive players to seven total All-America honors, seven players to 10 total All-Region accolades and 15 players to 17 total All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team laurels.

In 2022, Stenbroten helped the UW-Oshkosh defense lead the WIAC in 14.6 points allowed per game and 17 touchdowns, including only six through the air. The Titans also listed second with nine interceptions, 1,869 passing yards allowed and 186.9 passing yards per game. With a defensive red zone efficiency of 58.8 percent, UWO led the league and sat 12th in NCAA Division III.

During the 2021 campaign, the UW-Oshkosh defense listed fourth in the WIAC by allowing 26.7 points and 377.8 yards per game, including just 216.6 through the air to rank second in the league.

In 2019 Stenbroten’s defense ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III with 3.91 sacks per game as the Titans reached the national tournament for the fifth time in the past eight years. UW-Oshkosh also led the conference in 2019 with 182.7 passing yards allowed per game.

During 2018 season the UW-Oshkosh defense finished second in the conference in points (14.0) and rushing yards (125.6) allowed per game while ranking 12th in the country with 19 interceptions and 16th nationally with a 95.81 defensive passing efficiency rating.

In 2017 Stenbroten's defense recorded a pair of shutouts and helped the Titans reach the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III Championship. UW-Oshkosh led the WIAC with 21 interceptions gained and tied for the league lead with 27 turnovers gained.

During the 2016 campaign, Stenbroten helped UW-Oshkosh reach the Division III championship game for the first time in program history. Stenbroten's defense recorded 43 turnovers and 23 sacks while ranking third in the country with 27 interceptions, and fifth with 16 fumble recoveries and 12.7 points allowed per game.

Coaching the linebackers through the 2015 season, Stenbroten worked with a defensive unit that annually ranked among the finest in the WIAC.

In 2015 the Titans ranked third in the country in red-zone efficiency defense (.538), fourth in points allowed per game (11.2), 11th in passing efficiency defense (93.97) and 15th in passing yards allowed per contest (159.1). UW-Oshkosh allowed just six fourth-quarter points during the entire 13-game season and produced three shutouts during the same year for the first time since 1933.

During the Titans’ WIAC championship and NCAA playoff season of 2012, Stenbroten helped Taylor Goodman become the program’s first NCAA Division III All-American at linebacker. UW-Oshkosh’s defense recorded 31 takeaways and led the WIAC with a +17 turnover margin.

Stenbroten tutored six UW-Oshkosh linebackers to All-WIAC first team awards. Goodman received the honor in 2011 and 2012 while James Taraboi gained mention in 2009, Beau Steffens in 2014, and Reese Dziedzic and Branden Lloyd in 2015. Eric Stenbroten, Craig’s brother, made the top squad in 2007.

Stenbroten earned his bachelor’s degree from UW-Oshkosh in 2006. He was a three-time letterman at linebacker for the Titans from 2002-05. Stenbroten played in 34 career games and helped UW-Oshkosh compile a 7-3 record in 2005.

Stenbroten, a Monticello High School graduate, is married to Whitney (Tyriver), a former UW-Oshkosh basketball and softball player.
