Titans To Host Pointers In WIAC's Longest Football Rivalry

The oldest football rivalry in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will be renewed when nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh hosts UW-Stevens Point on Saturday (Nov. 6). Kickoff for the 118th meeting between the teams is scheduled for 1 p.m. at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Reigning league co-champion UW-Oshkosh (5-2, 3-2 WIAC), ranked 20th in the NCAA Division III by D3football.com, has won eight of its last nine matchups with UW-Stevens Point (2-6, 0-5), which boasts a 61-48-8 record in a storied series with the Titans that began Sept. 26, 1896.

UW-Oshkosh has won 28 of its last 29 regular season home games while UW-Stevens Point enters Saturday on a six-game losing streak. The Pointers, who suffered a 20-7 loss at UW-Oshkosh during the most recent meeting in 2019, are seeking their first victory at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium since a 24-17 decision Oct. 17, 2009.

The Titans head into Saturday on the heels of two straight conference wins, including a stunning 43-36 triumph at UW-Stout last weekend (Oct. 30) that featured four touchdowns, three two-point conversions and four lead changes during the final 3:44 of the game. UW-Oshkosh pulled out the thrilling victory on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Kobe Berghammer to Tony Steger with 14 seconds remaining before Brandon Kolgen's sack as time expired denied UW-Stout's final comeback hope.

UW-Stevens Point has been outscored by a combined 264-85 score during its past six games. The Pointers lost, 56-3, at home to 12th-ranked UW-La Crosse last Saturday after ceding 606 yards and 32 first downs.

UW-Oshkosh is averaging 31.7 points and 407.1 yards per game while allowing 27.9 points and 363.6 yards per contest. The Titans, gaining 210.7 yards through the air and 196.4 yards on the ground a contest, rank third nationally with four turnovers lost and 2.67 tackles for loss allowed per game.

UW-Stevens Point averages 18.8 points and 315.3 yards per contest while yielding 35.6 points and 400.6 yards per game. The Pointers, who average 3.5 yards per carry, have scored 14 of their 21 offensive touchdowns via passes.

UW-Oshkosh's Berghammer has completed 109 of 178 passes for 1,446 yards with 17 touchdowns and three interceptions. Berghammer has added 58 carries for a team leading 393 yards and five more scores.

The Titans ground game features four ballcarriers who have scored touchdowns and gained more than 100 yards on the year. Peter MacCudden averages 6.3 yards per rush, gaining 390 yards and scoring once on a team best 62 totes. Mitch Gerhartz had 54 carries for 309 yards and four touchdowns while Mac Winkler has contributed 136 yards and two scores on the ground with his 37 rushes.

UW-Oshkosh has scored 13 rushing touchdowns and averaged 5.6 yards per carry this season behind a starting offensive line of Mike Olsen, Hunter Schultz, Jason Myrick, Joe Blitstein, Josh Keskinen and Justin Kasuboski.

Steger highlights a balanced UW-Oshkosh receiving corps, hauling in 22 catches for 446 yards and four touchdowns. Kasuboski and Trae Tetzlaff have also reached the end zone four times as Kauboski has 21 grabs for 218 yards and Tetzlaff 20 receptions for 320 yards. Stephan Flores and Jimmy DuVal have combined to chip in 21 catches for 273 yards, including 12 grabs for 201 yards and a pair of scores from Flores. MacCudden has accounted for two receiving touchdowns for the Titans, who have also received an aerial score from Steven Makinen.

Titans placekicker and punter Jaydon Haag has gone 0-for-5 on field goals and 23 of 25 on extra points this year while averaging 34.3 yards per punt. Sam Kiesner has converted 3 of 4 extra points on the year for the Titans. UW-Oshkosh's Jaylen Grant ranks 14th in the country by averaging a WIAC leading 27.1 yards per kickoff return.

Carson Raddatz has made a team high 73 tackles for the UW-Oshkosh defense, which has also received 45 stops from Tory Jandrin, 44 from Kyle Scharenbroch, 36 from Nick Noethe and 30 from Tyler Staerkel. Kolgen has collected a squad best 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks among his 29 total stops. Raddatz, Jared Saad and Kollyn Beyer have each snared interceptions for UW-Oshkosh while Jhe'veon St. Julien and Tijs Santiago have recovered fumbles.

Trey Schroeder has started each of the last three games at quarterback for UW-Stevens Point, completing 65 of 105 passes on the year for 692 yards and six touchdowns and three interceptions. Max Herro has also started under center for the Pointers, completing 63 of 123 passes for 760 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

The UW-Stevens Point offense features running back Vercion Gammel along with the receiving quartet of Joe Aguilera, Markell Outlaw, Joe Hare and Jeremy Kobe.

Gammell has rushed 96 times for 422 yards and one touchdown as seven different Pointers have contributed toward the team's eight ground scores. Aguilera has a team best 27 catches for 407 yards and three touchdowns, Outlaw 23 receptions for 243 yards, Hare 16 grabs for 209 yards and four touchdowns, and Kobe 13 catches for 128 yards and two scores.

UW-Stevens Point's Kameron Kryzanski is the leading tackler in the WIAC, making 10.9 stops per contest to rank 16th in the nation. The Pointers have recorded seven interceptions, including two apiece from Tyler Van Ess and Jawahn Downing, and a pair of fumble recoveries. UW-Stevens Point has also notched 25.5 sacks as 16 different Pointers have played a role in quarterback takedowns this season.

On special teams, UW-Stevens Point placekicker Victor Ponterio has connected on 3 of 9 field goals, including a long of 45 yards, and 13 of 18 extra points. Pointers punter Carter Unger is averaging 36.9 yards per boot.

UW-Stevens Point won at home, 40-0, during the first ever meeting with UW-Oshkosh in front of "one of the largest crowds that has yet turned out to witness a football game," according to the Oct 3, 1896, Stevens Point Daily Journal. Pointers "Right Half Blencoe" scored the first touchdown of the series on a 50-yard run. Blencoe later added another 47-yard score in addition to his placekicking duties while "Left Half Holman," who filled in to kick on occasion for a winded Blencoe, reached the end zone thrice and "Left Tackle Polley" tallied a touchdown during the shutout.

UW-Oshkosh's 2021 Athletics Hall of Fame Class of former student-athletes Blaine Felsman (football, wrestling), Ayla (Mitchell) Helland (cross country, track & field), Greg Henschel (soccer), Willy Kaul (cross country, track & field), Erin (LeRoy) Klump (swimming & diving), Terri (Schwamb) Kruse (track & field), Richard Schroeder (baseball), Rob Stoltz (football, baseball), current sports information director Kennan Timm, and former student-athlete and coach Ted Van Dellen (basketball) will be introduced at halftime of Saturday's football game. The 10-member class will be officially inducted into the UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame Sunday (Nov. 7) morning at the Culver Family Welcome Center.
