Titans Upset 20th-Ranked Pointers

Three of Brett Kasper's nine completions went for touchdowns as the UW-Oshkosh football team scored 21 unanswered points and upset 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Saturday (Nov. 1) in Stevens Point.

UW-Oshkosh (4-4, 4-1 WIAC), which won its fourth straight game over the Pointers, is tied for second place in the conference standings with 16th-ranked UW-Platteville (6-2, 4-1 WIAC). UW-Stevens Point (6-2, 3-2 WIAC) fell to fourth place.

The Titans, who were limited to six first downs, scored touchdowns on a one-play drive in the second quarter and a pair of two-play drives in the third.

Following a roughing-the-passer penalty on the first snap of the drive, Kasper found Joe Sommers for a 62-yard touchdown that made the score 7-7 with 6:41 remaining in the second quarter.

On UW-Oshkosh's second play of the third quarter, Sam Mentkowski caught a 42-yard scoring pass from Kasper that gave the Titans a 14-7 lead.

Mitch Schultz recorded his second interception of the year on the next UW-Stevens Point possession. Kasper connected with Mentkowski for a 37-yard touchdown two plays later to give the Titans a 21-7 lead with 10:48 left in the third period.

The Pointers opened the scoring on 22-yard touchdown pass from Cody Nuernberg to Jared Pankow with 7:06 left in the second quarter. The scoring drive covered 66 yards in 12 plays.

UW-Stevens Point outgained UW-Oshkosh, 318-221, including 150-37 on the ground. But the Kasper-led Titan offense played its first turnover-free game since Oct. 19, 2013, at UW-River Falls.

Kasper completed 9-of-14 passes for 175 yards and three scores.

Mentkowski caught six passes for 105 yards to go along with his second and third touchdowns of the season. Sommers had two grabs for 67 yards and his first score of the year.

Ethan Steinhoff led the Titans with 13 rushing yards on three carries.

The three quick-strike scores were all the UW-Oshkosh defense needed. The Titans forced seven punts, created three turnovers and made three fourth-down stops.

Reese Dziedzic led UW-Oshkosh with nine tackles. Cody Huemmer, Levi Kossow and Kevin MacCudden added seven tackles apiece. Kossow recorded his first career interception, while Corey Sigler recovered his team-leading second fumble of the year.

Nuernberg completed 17-of-39 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown. He threw a pair of interceptions.

Pankow led UW-Stevens Point with five pass receptions for 56 yards. DeJuan Wright paced the Pointer ground game with 21 rushes for 89 yards.

UW-Oshkosh, which defeated the Pointers, 38-24, at Community Stadium in 2011, won consecutive games in Stevens Point for the first time since 1978 and 1980. At 113 meetings, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point is the oldest rivalry in the WIAC.

The Titans, who have won 18 of their last 21 WIAC contests, play their last regular-season home game next Saturday (Nov. 8) against UW-Eau Claire.
