Titans Aim For Third Straight WIAC Win

The UW-Oshkosh football team hopes to avenge last season's homecoming defeat by returning the favor when it visits UW-Stevens Point on Saturday (Oct. 9). The Pointers' homecoming contest will kick off at 1 p.m. at Community Stadium at Goerke Park.

The Titans (2-2/2-0 WIAC) accomplished some major achievements with their 28-17 victory over UW-La Crosse last week. It was UW-Oshkosh's first triumph in its last 38 games with the Eagles. The win also gave the Titans a 2-0 conference mark – something they last accomplished in 1991. A second-half shutout from the defense helped UW-Oshkosh hold on after taking the lead with a 17-play drive. Nate Wara (So. • Oshkosh) guided the offense with three touchdown passes, giving him 10 in his last three games.

Wara, who is the seventh-rated passer in the NCAA Division III, has posted 12 touchdowns with one interception this season. He tops the WIAC in total offense (285 yards per game), boosting the Titans to at least 28 points in every contest. Besides Wara's 245 rushing yards, Charlie Weissman (Jr. • Colgate) has totaled 119 on the ground. Weissman and Garrie Fox (Jr. • Madison) each have 12+ receptions, with Fox amassing 261 yards and four touchdowns. UW-Oshkosh's defense is paced by Frank Martin's (Jr. • Greenleaf) 28 tackles and Nick Jolin's (So. • Three Lakes) two interceptions.

Despite having the league's leading receiver, UW-Stevens Point (2-2/0-1 WIAC) has gone with a run-oriented attack in 2010. The Pointers use Keith Ingram (303 yards) and Mike Griffin (260), who each list in the top eight of the WIAC in rushing. At wideout, Jared Jenkins owns 29 catches for 263 yards and two scores. Hitting on 48 percent of his passes for 426 yards, Jake Swank handles the quarterback position. Brandon Bruger has recorded a conference-high five sacks on a defense that also features Joe Mleziva (30 tackles).

UW-Stevens Point dropped its WIAC opener last week to 18th-ranked UW-Eau Claire, 20-13 in overtime. The Blugolds blocked a field goal try at the end of regulation before scoring the game-winner on a 16-yard pass. Jenkins led the Pointers in the contest with nine catches, as Ingram ran for 95 yards. During its first three games at home, UW-Stevens Point lost to Willamette University (Ore.) and posted convincing wins against Missouri S & T and Albion College (Mich.).

This will be the 109th meeting between the two schools, making it the 14th-longest rivalry in NCAA Division III history. The Pointers hold a 60-40-8 edge going back to 1896. Last year's bout ended with a 24-17 decision in favor of UW-Stevens Point. Jenkins was the star once again, compiling 189 receiving yards and a key fourth-quarter touchdown.
