Titans Welcome Pointers For Homecoming

With each team coming off a tight victory, it should be a good battle when UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point meet on Saturday (Oct. 17). The Titans' homecoming contest has a kickoff of 1:30 p.m. at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (3-2/1-1 WIAC) posted a 31-29 win against UW-River Falls last week (Oct. 10). The Titans took advantage of 137 rushing yards by Jeremy Roach (Jr. • Deerfield) and an offensive fumble recovery score from Jamie Braasch (Fr. • Oshkosh). In its first two contests, UW-Oshkosh won by 18-plus points before dropping its next two games by seven or less.

Roach has 369 yards and five touchdowns on the ground for the Titans, who have tallied at least 25 points in every game. Quarterback Nate Wara (Fr. • Oshkosh) has 668 yards and four touchdowns passing, in addition to 176 yards and four scores rushing. Both Craig McClelland (Jr. • Union Grove) and Justin Budiac (So. • Mukwonago) have 15 catches to pace UW-Oshkosh. The defensive unit features James Taraboi (Sr. • Grafton), who has a WIAC-leading 67 tackles, including eight for a loss, and two interceptions.

The Pointers (3-2/2-0 WIAC) pulled out a 7-6 win against UW-Stout in a defensive struggle last week. Jared Jenkins caught a 24-yard touchdown pass during the third quarter for the deciding score. In the conference opener, UW-Stevens Point won 48-33 thanks to 447 yards and five touchdowns passing by Jared Beckwith.

The WIAC's most dynamic duo is Beckwith and Jenkins, who have hooked up 46 times for 688 yards and nine touchdowns through five games. Beckwith guides the passing attack with 1,287 yards and 11 scores while completing 64 percent of his throws. UW-Stevens Point gets 263 of its 344 yards per game through the air, but Mike Ferron tops the run game with 59 carries for 187 yards. Joe Mleziva has 48 tackles to pace the Pointers' defense.

In 2008, UW-Stevens Point maintained its national ranking with a 34-33 overtime triumph against the Titans. Beckwith fired 59 passes and racked up 470 yards, but it was the defense that stymied a Titans' two-point try to end the game. McClelland tossed three touchdowns of his own, including a 71-yard connection with Roach, in the loss. The Pointers hold a 59-40-8 edge in the all-time series, which began 103 years ago.
