Titans Win On Final Play Of Season

Garrie Fox (Fr. • Madison) pulled in a two-yard touchdown pass with no time left on the clock as the UW-Oshkosh football team shocked UW-River Falls, 13-12, on Saturday (Nov. 15) in River Falls. The Titans (4-5/2-5 WIAC) finished the year with three one-point victories and the other win coming by two points.

Fox ended the day with 70 yards on four catches to lead all receivers, while UW-Oshkosh's Craig McClelland (So. • Union Grove) threw for 192 yards on 13-of-24 passes. Jeremy Roach (So. • Deerfield) added 69 yards rushing and 23 yards receiving for the Titans.

After the Falcons (3-7/2-5 WIAC) intercepted a Titans' pass with 2:48 remaining, UW-Oshkosh needed a defensive stand. They were up to the challenge, forcing UW-River Falls to punt from its own five-yard line. Charlie Weissman (Fr. • Colgate) then returned the punt 17 yards to set up his offense at the Falcons' 28-yard line.

Trailing by six points, McClelland converted a fourth-and-six with a 14-yard pass to Fox. Three plays later, a pass interference penalty put the Titans at the two-yard line with three seconds remaining. UW-Oshkosh used McClelland's pass to Fox to tie the game on the last play of the season. The Titans then won the game on Andy Lindsay's (Fr. • Howard) extra point.

The game's first 18 points all came in the first half, with the Titans putting together a lengthy drive on the opening possession.

Roach started it with a 29-yard kickoff return and then ran the ball on nine of 15 plays. He totaled 44 yards on the ground while Weissman ripped off an 11-yard carry. Lindsay knocked through a 20-yard field goal to put UW-Oshkosh up, 3-0, with 6:22 left in the first quarter.

UW-River Falls answered with an 11-play drive of its own to get into scoring position. Greg Klingelhutz ran for gains of eight, seven and seven yards to go along with an 11-yard reception. When the Falcons faced fourth-and-three, he broke free for a 25-yard rush down to the four-yard line. Storm Harmon snuck the ball in for a one-yard touchdown to give the Falcons a 6-3 lead, but the Titans' Kevin Bahl (Jr. Muskego) kept it that way by blocking the extra point attempt.

Another double-digit-play drive occurred when UW-Oshkosh got the ball back. The Titans marched 50 yards on 14 snaps, beginning with a pair of nine-yard gains by McClelland. He then hooked up with Weissman for 16 yards and Fox for a completion of 15. Lindsay came in and drilled a 25-yard field goal with 7:09 left in the half to tie the game at 6.

The Falcons made it four straight trips resulting in points after Ben Arata set up his squad with a 29-yard kickoff return. Klingelhutz reeled in two passes for a total of 26 yards and then capped the drive with a 21-yard touchdown run. His rushing attempt on the two-point conversion failed to keep the score at 12-6 with 4: 09 to go in the second quarter.

Coming out of halftime, UW-River Falls moved down the field once again. Nick Vignalo jump-started his team with a 44-yard kickoff return, but the Falcons were unable to take advantage. On fourth-and-three at the UW-Oshkosh 14-yard line, the Titans stuffed Klingelhutz and ended the threat.

The two teams used their punters on the next two possessions before UW-Oshkosh had receiver Juston Wara (So. • Oshkosh) throw an interception at the goal line. UW-River Falls went 81 yards on the following 13 plays, but the Titans stood strong again, getting a fumble recovery from Chris DeBlois (Jr. • Kimberly). That play closed out a scoreless third period and set the tone for 15 minutes without points in the contest's final quarter.

Weissman finished with four catches for 55 yards as UW-Oshkosh totaled 285 yards of offense. The Titans achieved 17 first downs, thanks to 8-of-15 conversions on their third-down opportunities. On defense, James Taraboi (Jr. • Grafton) recorded 10 tackles as Bahl contributed nine stops.

UW-River Falls handed the ball to Klingelhutz 31 times, and he responded with 141 yards and one touchdown. Harmon completed 12-of-18 passes for 120 yards, while the Titans held the WIAC's leading receiver, Michael Zweifel, to four catches and 49 yards. Cole Lowell paced the Falcons' defense with 13 tackles and Ross Potter turned in two quarterback sacks.
