UW-Oshkosh Selected to Host 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships
UW-Oshkosh has been awarded the bid to host the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championships at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.
On Tuesday (April 18), the NCAA announced more than 600 host sites for preliminary rounds and finals of predetermined championships to be held in Divisions I, II and III from 2017-18 through 2021-22.
UW-Oshkosh, which will host the national cross country championships on Nov. 17, 2018, was also chosen to host the 2019 Division III Cross Country Midwest Regional at the Lake Breeze Golf Club on Nov. 16.
UW-Oshkosh hosted the Division III Cross Country Midwest Regional in 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2016. The Division III Championship was previously hosted by UW-Oshkosh at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in 1999, 2011 and 2015.
The NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships will also be held during 2019 and 2021 in Louisville, Ky., and 2020 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
In addition to the cross country events, UW-Oshkosh will remain co-host of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship with Lawrence University and the Fox Cities Convention and Visitor’s Bureau through 2018 at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.
After hosting the Division III Baseball Championship since 2000, UW-Oshkosh, Lawrence University and the Fox Cities Convention and Visitor’s Bureau will turn over hosting honors to the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) and Go Cedar Rapids in 2019.
UW-Oshkosh, Lawrence University and the Fox Cities Convention and Visitor’s Bureau announced last October that they were relinquishing hosting duties for the Division III Baseball Championship due to changes in future championship schedules and the resulting availability of Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Division III Baseball Championship’s 19-year run in Appleton will be the fourth-longest tenure of an NCAA championship at one site.
The IIAC and Go Cedar Rapids will host the Division III Baseball Championship from 2019-22 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The NCAA received more than 3,000 bid submissions from NCAA member schools, conferences, sports commissions and cities vying to host predetermined rounds for 84 of the NCAA’s 90 championships. A total of 613 sites were awarded for this cycle. The respective NCAA sports committees and the divisional championships cabinets/committees reviewed the bid proposals and selected the sites.
There were 43 states selected to host at least one round of an NCAA championship, with Pennsylvania leading the way with a total of 53. Florida was awarded the second most with 51, while Indiana totaled 41, the third highest. Buoyed with a total of six fall championships for the 2018 Division II National Championships Festival, Pittsburgh was awarded 22 preliminary rounds and finals, the most of any city.
The 2018 Division III Cross Country Championships will be the 39th and 40th national finals hosted by UW-Oshkosh, which will have previously hosted the Division III finals of baseball (2000-18), women’s basketball (1996), men’s and women’s cross country (1999, 2011, 2015), men’s and women’s indoor track & field (1994, 1997, 2001), men’s and women’s outdoor track & field (2007-08) and women’s volleyball (1996, 2016).
