NCAA Division III Week - 1996 Women's Basketball

UW-Oshkosh posted a perfect 31-0 record on the way to the 1996 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship.

The Titans won all 25 of their regular-season games, including a 16-0 mark in WIAC play.

During the NCAA Tournament, UW-Oshkosh defeated DePauw University (Ind.), Beloit College, Washington University (Mo.) and UW-Eau Claire to reach the Final Four.

The Final Four was held in Kolf Sports Center, with the Titans earning a 62-37 victory over New York University in the national semifinal. The title contest drew a Division III-record 4,001 fans. Most of the crowd went home happy after UW-Oshkosh topped Mount Union College (Ohio), 66-50, for the only basketball national title in school history.

Center Wendy Wangerin was named NCAA Division III Player of the Year, while Kathi Bennett received National Coach of the Year. Guards Shelley Dietz and Tracy Johnson also were voted to the 1996 All-WIAC First Team.
