Hall Of Fame Inductee: John LeRoy

This is the sixth in a 14-part series that introduces the 14 members of the 2024 UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Class. Their inductions will take place Friday, August 2 (3:30 p.m.) at the Culver Family Welcome Center (625 Pearl Avenue) on the UW-Oshkosh campus. UW-Oshkosh then celebrates 50 years of inductions into its Athletics Hall of Fame during a special event held Saturday, August 3 (3:30 p.m.) at the Oshkosh Convention Center (2 North Main Street). Hall of fame members in attendance will be recognized and receive a variety of commemorative items. The keynote speaker is Iowa State University Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard, a 1999 UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame inductee. Tickets ($45 each, aged five and older) for this event are open to the public and will be on sale through July 1. A national champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, John LeRoy had a very successful career as a member of the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country and track & field programs from 2001-05.

LeRoy achieved his greatest recognition in track & field, where he competed indoors for the Titans in 2002, 2004 and 2005 and outdoors four consecutive seasons from 2002-05. He ran cross country for UW-Oshkosh in 2001, 2003 and 2004. LeRoy missed the 2002 cross country and 2003 indoor track & field seasons due to an injury.

Running on the indoor track, LeRoy was a participant on UW-Oshkosh distance medley relay teams that earned All-America recognition with its finish of second in 2002 and fourth in 2005 at the NCAA Division III Championship. The performance of LeRoy and his three other relay partners helped the Titans finish fifth in the national team standings in 2002 and sixth in 2005.

LeRoy was a two-time WIAC indoor champion as well. He won the 800-meter run at the 2004 conference meet and ran on the Titans' first-place distance medley relay team in 2002. LeRoy and teammates David Cisewski, 2014 UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame inductee Matt Groose and Kevin Klueger won the distance medley relay with a school-record time of 9:56.38.

The WIAC Indoor Championship additionally featured LeRoy finishing second in the 1,500-meter run in 2002 and fourth in the mile run in 2005.

LeRoy added another school-record indoor performance to his resume when he ran to a 3,000-meter time of 8:21.06 at the Iowa State University Classic held February 12, 2005.

LeRoy's execution on the outdoor track was highlighted by his first-place time of 9:00.18 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2004 Division III Championship. LeRoy earned another All-America award at the championship by finishing eighth in the 5,000-meter run. His performances helped UW-Oshkosh place sixth in the team standings.

LeRoy picked up his lone victory at the WIAC Outdoor Championship in 2003 when he won the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He also finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run and sixth in the 1,500-meter run at the 2003 and 2004 conference outdoor meets, respectively.

In cross country, LeRoy ran at the Division III Championship three times. He also won a regional title and placed in the top seven at the WIAC Championship on three occasions.

LeRoy finished seventh in 2001, fourth in 2003 and second in 2004 at the WIAC Championship. His 2003 listing helped the Titans to their ninth conference title in program history.

LeRoy won the 2004 Division III Midwest Regional title with an 8,000-meter time of 24:23. He also placed 21st at the regional in 2001 and eighth in 2003 when UW-Oshkosh was victorious the team competition.

Nationally, LeRoy finished 55th at the Division III Championship in 2001, 53rd in 2003 and 129th in 2004. His effort helped UW-Oshkosh place sixth in the team standings in 2001 and ninth in 2003.

LeRoy is a 2000 graduate of Oshkosh North High School, where he was inducted into the school's hall of fame in 2006. He graduated from UW-Oshkosh in 2006 and received an associate degree from Fox Valley Technical College in 2009.

Employed as a facilities manager for CR Meyer & Sons Inc., LeRoy lives in Larsen with wife Danielle, daughter Quinn and sons Cashton and Lincoln. He has been a member of the Winneconne Youth Wrestling Club since 2018 and presently serves as the organization's president.

LeRoy joins sister, Erin (LeRoy) Klump, as a member of the UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame. Klump was inducted in 2021 for her outstanding diving career at UW-Oshkosh.

The UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1974 to enhance school tradition and give lasting recognition to those student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and friends of the university who distinguished themself at an exemplary level.

Each hall of fame member represents greatness, with their accomplishments built on campus, after graduation or through meritorious efforts that benefit the UW-Oshkosh athletics program.

The first UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held April 28, 1974, at The Pioneer Inn & Marina. The five inductees were Edward Boguski, Edward Hall, Burton Karges, Robert Kolf and Robert Williams.

Four venues have hosted the UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony – The Pioneer Inn & Marina (1974-2001), Hilton Garden Inn Oshkosh (2002), UW-Oshkosh's Reeve Memorial Union (2003-13) and UW-Oshkosh's Culver Family Welcome Center (2014-19, 2021-Present).
