Baumann, Thompson Presented With UW-Oshkosh Coaches Award

Wrestler Mike Baumann and track & field national champion Sydney Thompson were selected as the 2021 recipients of the UW-Oshkosh Senior Coaches Award.

Baumann was named the men's winner of the Jim Flood Award while Thompson was chosen as the women's winner of the Phyllis Roney Award.

Both awards are presented annually to a male and female student-athlete who has displayed leadership qualities, skill, character, attitude, courage, achievement, service to the community, contribution to the team, sportsmanship, dedication, and loyalty to the UW-Oshkosh athletics program.

Baumann graduated from UW-Oshkosh in May after only three years of attendance. The political science major compiled a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average while being a member of the UW-Oshkosh Dean's List four times and the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll three.

Baumann, a 2018 New Berlin Eisenhower High School graduate, was a wrestling letterwinner for UW-Oshkosh in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He represented the Titans in the 174-pound weight class at the 2021 WIAC Championship.

Baumann was also three-year member of the Fox Valley Reserve Officer Training Corps. The program provides college-trained officers for the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. Baumann was commissioned as a second lieutenant in May and will attend law school at Marquette University this fall before beginning his active military duty.

Thompson, a finance major, graduated with a 3.91 cumulative GPA from UW-Oshkosh in May. She transferred to UW-Oshkosh from NCAA Division II Minnesota State University, Mankato following the 2018-19 academic year.

Last May, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Thompson its Co-Field Performer of the Meet at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

Thompson threw to victories in both the discus and shot put competitions while finishing ninth at the championship in the hammer throw. She was seeded third in the discus and won the event with a season-best measurement of 153-4. Thompson entered the shot put activity as the top seed and won the event with a season-best distance of 49-11 3/4. She finished ninth in the hammer throw with a measurement of 165-3.

Thompson was also named Field Performer of the Meet at the 2021 WIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. She took first place in both the discus and shot put events at the meet while finishing fifth in the hammer throw.

Thompson, a 2017 Mercer High School graduate, was an indoor track & field letterwinner for the Titans in 2020 and 2021 and an outdoor track & field letterwinner in 2021. She was a fifth-place finisher in the shot put at the 2020 WIAC Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Thompson's two seasons at Minnesota State University, Mankato featured third-place finishes in both the discus and shot put events at the 2018 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

Thompson was a member of the UW-Oshkosh Dean's List four times and the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll twice. She is employed as a para-planner for Mersberger Financial Group, Inc. in Sheboygan Falls.

Recent winners of the Jim Flood Award were Todd Beadle (Track & Field) in 2020, Ian Sewell (Swimming & Diving) in 2019 and Charlie Noone (Basketball) in 2018.

The latest winners of the Phyllis Roney Award were Samantha Jaeke (Volleyball) and Melissa Srnka (Cross Country/Track & Field) in 2020, Chloe Pustina (Basketball) in 2019 and Eliza Campbell (Basketball) in 2018.
