Titans To Compete At WIAC Championship

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will strive for a fourth straight crown at the 2010 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Tennis Championships on Oct. 23-24 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. The 39th edition of the league meet will also decide six singles champions and three sets of doubles victors.

The team title will be determined by using a combination of the regular-season dual meet standings and the WIAC championship results. The finish in the regular-season standings accounts for one-third of the criteria, while the conference championship accounts for the remaining two-thirds.

Point distribution following the dual meet rotation included: UW-Whitewater (6-0) with 7 points, UW-La Crosse (5-1) with 6 points, UW-Eau Claire (4-2) with 5 points, UW-Oshkosh (3-3) with 4 points, UW-River Falls (2-4) with 3 points, UW-Stevens Point (1-5) with 2 points and UW-Stout (0-6) with 1 point.

The initial day of competition at the conference event will consist of the first two rounds of doubles matches followed by the first round of singles matches. The second day of the championship will feature the final two rounds of singles matches in addition to the final round of doubles matches.

The top four teams (following the conclusion of the WIAC championship) will advance to a team tournament that will determine the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship. The team tournament will be held at the site of the overall conference champion the weekend prior to the NCAA championship next spring.

UW-La Crosse owns a conference-high 15 first-place team finishes, while UW-Eau Claire has 12 and UW-Whitewater 10.

Individually, UW-Whitewater senior Amy Siemon has captured two singles crowns and three doubles titles in her career. She could become just the second individual in WIAC history to secure four doubles championships, joining UW-Whitewater's Wendy Seymour (1988-91). Siemon won the No. 3 doubles flight in 2007 and 2009, while claiming the No. 1 title in 2008. In singles competition, she earned the No. 3 title a year ago after winning the No. 4 championship in 2008.

Additional returning champions include: UW-Eau Claire sophomore Taylor Heltne (No. 6 singles - 2009), UW-La Crosse junior Kelly Kuether (No. 1 singles - 2009), UW-La Crosse senior Kelly Stadum (No. 2 singles - 2009), UW-La Crosse senior Katie McDonald (No. 3 singles - 2007) and UW-Whitewater junior Annie Smith (No. 3 singles - 2008/No. 2 doubles - 2009).

The Titans' top performers this season have been Emily Bostwick (Jr. • Whitefish Bay), Lauren Piotrowski (Fr. • Greendale) and Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah), who all own an 8-2 record in singles play. Piotrowski and Tornow have teamed up to post an 8-2 doubles mark, while Brianna Theobald (Fr. • Manitowoc) has added an 8-5 record in her singles matches.
