Titans Finish Fourth At WIAC Championship

UW-Whitewater secured its fourth consecutive WIAC women's tennis title at the league championship on Oct. 23-24 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

The team crown was determined by using a combination of the regular-season dual meet standings and the WIAC championship results. The finish in the regular-season standings accounted for one-third of the criteria, while the conference championship accounted for the remaining two-thirds.

The WIAC championship for the Warhawks is the 11th in program history. They accumulated 21 points in this year's overall championship standings to surpass UW-La Crosse's second-place sum of 18. UW-Eau Claire placed third with 15, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 12, UW-Stevens Point fifth with eight, UW-River Falls sixth with six and UW-Stout seventh with four.

UW-Whitewater, UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh advance to a team tournament in the spring that will be hosted by UW-Whitewater the weekend prior to the NCAA Division III Championship. The winner of the four-team tournament receives the conference's automatic bid into the national event.

She opened play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over UW-Stout's Katie Sorensen and a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 victory over UW-Eau Claire's Emily Hiebl. Following a 6-4, 6-3 defeat to UW-Whitewater's Annie Smith, Bostwick tallied a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win over Taylor Heltne (UW-Eau Claire) in the third-place match.

There she ran into another UW-Whitewater force, Lauren Aguilar, who prevailed by a 6-2, 6-0 score. Tornow recorded a comfortable 6-0, 6-1 win over UW-Eau Claire's Lexi DeMario in the third-place matchup.

UW-Oshkosh received solid scoring from its doubles groups in the second and third flights. The duo of Piotrowski and Tornow got off to a great start with an 8-5 victory against UW-River Falls before dropping an 8-3 match to UW-Whitewater and an 8-4 set to UW-Eau Claire.
