Schiro Sets New School Record as Titans Conclude Action at WIAC Championships
BROWN DEER, Wis.—Francesca Schiro swam a NCAA Division III B qualifying time in the 100 freestyle as the UW-Oshkosh Titans women's swimming and diving squad finished action at the 2023 WIAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
Head coach Chris Culp was named the women's swimming coach of the year, his second time earning this honor. Abbi Priestley was named the WIAC Diver of the Meet. Brianna Smith was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.
Schiro reset the school record in the prelims in the 100 freestyle before breaking her own record in the finals. Schiro clocked in at 51.31 for a runner-up finish and broke the previous record of 52.04 set in 2005.
Candence Showalter clocked in at 53.60 in the 100 freestyle, finishing in fifth place.
Smith took home sixth place in the 1650 freestyle, timing in at 18:07.29. Angela Satterlee competed in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 21:45.72.
The Titan squad of Showalter, Schiro, Smith, and Brianna Wesenberg broke a 25-year old record in the 400 freestyle relay, clocking in at 3:36.73. The previous record was set in 1998 at 3:38.07.
Grace Fergus clocked in at 2:16.47 in the 200 backstroke, which was a top-12 finish.
Wesenberg clocked in at 2:31.15 in the 200 butterfly.
Records Broken Recap
Schiro broke the 100 and 200 freestyle records. Showalter reset the school record in the 100 butterfly. Showalter reset the school record in the 200 IM on Thursday. In the 800 freestyle relay, the Titans squad of Showalter, Schiro, Smith, and Wesenberg broke the record which was set last season.
