Titans To Perform At WIAC Championship

Four-time participant Margherite Pettenuzzo and three-time contestants Lauryn Davis, Megan Footit, and Erika Priebe lead UW-Oshkosh's list of entries for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship (Presented by Culver's) that will be held this weekend in Reedsburg.

The 26th version of the league championship begins at 11 a.m. Friday (Oct. 8) with a shotgun start and continues with flighted tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 9-10) at the Reedsburg Country Club.

The winner of the 54-hole WIAC Championship, which is being held at the Reedsburg Country Club for the sixth consecutive year, earns the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship that will be held May 10-13, 2022, in Houston, Texas.

UW-Oshkosh, along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stout, and four-time defending champion UW-Whitewater, are the leading candidates to win this year's league title. The Titans have been a top-three finisher at seven of the past eight conference championships.

UW-Whitewater won its most recent WIAC title in May after last fall's league championship was postponed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Warhawks totaled 925 strokes to win their sixth conference championship in program history.

UW-La Crosse finished second to the Warhawks last spring with 963 strokes while 2016 WIAC champion UW-Stout placed third with 1,021, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 1,026, UW-Stevens Point fifth with 1,028, UW-Platteville sixth with 1,053, UW-Oshkosh seventh with 1,055 and UW-River Falls eighth with 1,094.

UW-Eau Claire boasts a league-high nine first-place finishes at the championship, UW-Oshkosh four and both UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout three apiece. The Titans won their WIAC championships in the fall of 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2015.

UW-Oshkosh, under the leadership of first-year head coach Jeremiah Hoffmann, has played in six tournaments this fall. The Titans won their own Fall Classic on Sept. 4-5 and placed third at the UW-La Crosse Invitational on Sept. 11 and fifth at the Viterbo University Invitational on Sept. 12.

Forming UW-Oshkosh's starting lineup for this weekend are Footit, Pettenuzzo, Priebe, Ava Downie and Josie Hofer. Davis, Alyssa Dreher, Gwyn Golembiewski and Kaylee Sadowski will compete for the Titans in the championship as individuals.

Pettenuzzo, who finished 20th at the WIAC Championship last spring, 13th in 2019 and 26th in 2018, owns an 84.6 stroke average per 18 holes this season. She placed second at the Titan Fall Classic and 15th at the UW-La Crosse Invitational. 

Davis finished 21st at the WIAC Championship last spring and 28th in 2019. She possesses an 89.75 average this season. Davis was a 22nd-place finisher at the UW-La Crosse Invitational.

Footit is averaging 85.875 strokes this fall. She finished 34th at the WIAC Championship last spring and 33rd in 2019. Footit ranked sixth at the Titan Fall Classic, ninth at the UW-La Crosse Invitational and 17th at the Viterbo University Invitational.

Priebe placed 19th at the WIAC Championship in 2019 and seventh in 2018. She is averaging 83.33 strokes this season. Priebe finished second at the Titan Fall Classic, 10th at the UW-La Crosse Invitational and 17th at the Viterbo University Invitational.

Downie finished 52nd and Golembiewski 55th at last spring's WIAC Championship.

UW-Whitewater's lineup features five golfers averaging below 84 strokes per 18 holes, including Ashton Sinak who owns a team-best 78.0 stroke average. She claimed WIAC Player of the Year honors in 2019.

UW-La Crosse's Sophie Denure and Molly Larsen share team honors with an 82.7 stroke average while UW-Stout's Abbey Filipiak was the conference's Newcomer of the Year a season ago and currently sustains a 78.3 stroke average.

UW-Eau Claire's Lexi Meade is the reigning conference Player of the Year and has a 79.9 stroke average this fall.

UW-Platteville's Markie Ash boasts a conference-best 76.5 stroke average while UW-River Falls' Sydney Hufnagle has a team-best 84.1 stroke average. Hufnagle claimed medalist accolades at the UW-Oshkosh Titan Fall Classic.

UW-Stevens Point's Bree Downie established a conference championship record for low 18-hole score with a 69 during the final round of last year's championship. This season, she has a team-best 86.1 stroke average.
