Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak to Six

EAU CLAIRE, Wis.—With a strong defensive presence in the game, the UW-Oshkosh Titans women's basketball program defeated the league-leading UW-Eau Claire Blugolds, 65-57. The Titans (16-5, 6-4 WIAC) held the nationally-ranked Blugolds (16-5, 7-3 WIAC) to their lowest field goal percentage of the season at 30.3%.

Kayce Vaile led the Titans with 12 points on four-of-eight shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers and two-of-three at the free throw line. Vaile recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds.

Sarah Hardwick and Jenna Jorgensen added 11 points respectively. Hardwick, who went four-of-eight from the field, added seven rebounds in the contest. Jorgensen went four-of-seven from the field as Kennedy Osterman had nine rebounds for the Titans. Osterman, Allison Forney, and Kate Huml were perfect at the free throw line this evening for the Titans.

The Titans shot 39.6% from the field (21-of-53), added eight 3-pointers, and outrebounded the Blugolds by two (40-42). The Titans added nine assists, six steals, and five blocks in the contest.

Game Summary

Huml and Ava Douglas put the Titans on the board, tying the game at four with a pair of free throws. The Blugolds hit back-to-back shots to jump out to a 9-4 lead over the Titans. Jorgensen and Douglas combined for a pair of 3-pointers in 30 seconds as the Titans took a one-point advantage with 4:59 remaining in the quarter. Douglas hit her second 3-pointer of the day before providing an assist to Osterman on a 3-pointer to end the first quarter of play.

Finding a spot behind the arc, Forney hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter and extend the Titans lead to four at 21-17. The Titans held the Blugolds to a pair of free throws in the for nearly four minutes in the quarter. The Blugolds' Jessie Ruden, who leads the league in scoring, hit a 3-pointer with 1:09 remaining in the quarter for a 30-29 lead by the Blugolds. Vaile hit a 3-pointer to put the Titans back on top as the Titans took a 34-30 lead at the break.

Hardwick started the third quarter the same way she ended the second quarter, with a jump shot as the Titans took a six-point lead. The Titan defense kept the pressure up, holding the Blugolds to four points in the opening five minutes of the quarter. Douglas scored the final point of the third quarter for the Titans, as the Titans took a six-point lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Jorgensen hit a jump shot to open the final quarter of play as the Titans took a 47-39 lead. The Blugolds fought back to tie the game at 47 with 6:13 remaining as Vaile completed an old-fashioned 3-point play. A pair of 3-pointers from Vaile and Jorgensen gave the Titans a five-point advantage. The Titans held the Blugolds to two 3-pointers in the final 4:23 of the game as the Titans upset the Blugolds by eight, 65-57.

The Titans return to Kolf Sports Center for a two-game home stint. The Titans host UW-River Falls on February 4 at 3 p.m. for Senior Day.
