Women's Basketball Defeats Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis.—A big defensive effort in the second half saw the UW-Oshkosh Titans women's basketball squad defeat UW-Stevens Point. The Titans (12-5, 3-4 WIAC) posted a 58-38 victory over the Pointers (10-8, 2-5 WIAC).

Jenna Jorgensen led all scorers with 13 points on five-of-nine shooting and three baskets from beyond the arc. Mahra Wieman recorded 12 points on three-of-six shooting. Rounding out the Titans in double-digit scoring Kayce Vaile added 11 points and Sarah Hardwick collected 10 points. Kate Huml led the Titans with five assists as Hardwick led with nine rebounds.

Three Titans went perfect from the free throw line as Vaile, Wieman, and Ava Douglas combined for 11-of-11 at the line. The Titans shot 84.6% from the line, only missing two shots. The Titans went 44.4% from the field (20-of-45) and made seven 3-pointers. The Titans outrebounded the Pointers 43-25 and collected 13 assists, three steals, and two blocks.

The Titans held the Pointers to 25% from the floor (14-of-56) and 20% from beyond the arc (4-of-20). The Titans held the Pointers to season lows in field goal percentage, rebounding, and tied for fewest points scored in a game.

Game Summary

Hardwick opened the game with a layup on an assist from Huml. Vaile answered a jump shot by the Pointers as the teams kept the game close early. Jorgensen hit the first 3-pointer of the night with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter as the Titans took a 7-4 lead. Hitting three 3-pointers in a row, the Pointers took a four point lead heading into the final minute of the first quarter.

Wieman and Vaile teamed up for a 7-0 run as the Titans took a 16-13 lead early in the second quarter. The Pointers held the Titans without a basket for five minutes, jumping out to a five-point lead at 21-16. A 3-pointer by Bridget Froehkle, on an assist by Hardwick, tied the game at 21 with 2:48 remaining in the first half. The Pointers took the lead for the final time on a layup with 57 seconds remaining in the first half. Wieman made back-to-back trips to the free throw line as the Titans took a 28-25 lead at the break.

The Pointers fired the first shot of the third quarter as the Pointers were held scoreless as the Titans went on a 10-1 run in the quarter. The Titans scored the final six points of the third quarter and took a 44-30 lead into the final quarter.

The Pointers scored five of their eight fourth quarter points in the first two minutes of the final quarter as the Titans continued to build their lead. The Titans largest lead of the game would come at 58-37, a 21-point advantage for the Titans with 34 seconds remaining in the game.
