Colan Treml, WIAC Student-Athlete Spotlight

Each week during the 2018-19 academic year, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will feature two student-athletes (one male and one female) from one of its eight institutions for a "Student-Athlete Spotlight" Q & A segment. The segments, presented by Culver's, will be also posted every Thursday on the WIAC website.

Name: Colan Treml
Institution: UW-Oshkosh
Hometown (High School): Sycamore, Ill. (Sycamore)
Year in school: Senior
Sport: Baseball
Major: Communication Studies & Journalism

Why did you choose to attend UW-Oshkosh?
I loved the campus as well as everything about the city of Oshkosh. Having a larger city with a campus that seems relatively small was a huge factor for me. Making the choice to attend UW-Oshkosh was the best decision I've ever made.

What do you like most about competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference?
I love the competitive nature of it all. Everybody who is a part of the WIAC takes their athletics extremely seriously, and that's exactly what I wanted when I came out of high school.

What is your favorite…

Menu item from Culver's? Family sized portion of cheese curds
Flavor of the Day from Culver's? Vanilla custard with Butterfinger
Spot on Campus? Kolf Sports Center
Movie? What's Eating Gilbert Grape
TV Show? Parks and Rec
Food? Orange Chicken (Panda Express)
Musical Group/Artist? Thomas Rhett
Professional Sports Team? Milwaukee Brewers
Hobby? Watching more baseball
Vacation Spot? My hometown, Sycamore, Illinois
Quote/motto? "It's a great day to have a great day."

What is your greatest sports moment?
In fifth grade I attended a small, private grade school called St. Mary's. That year my best friends and I won our basketball conference tournament against archrival St. Pat's. Although that may not seem very exciting, it was the greatest athletic experience I've ever had and is something I will never forget.

What is your favorite thing to do off the court/field with your teammates?
Going to Pizza Ranch on student discount nights.

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?
Abolish the designated hitter. Let the pitchers hit!

The best thing about your hometown is?
High school Friday night football! You probably won't understand until you see it, but the sun setting right behind the south end zone is breathtaking.

When you surf the web, the site you most often go to?
The Wall Street Journal.

What is your greatest fear?
Sharks. I can't tell you why, but they terrify me.

What do you plan to do after graduation?
I plan to hopefully work full time in human resources or public relations.

Three things on your "bucket list"?
1. Watch a game at every Major League Baseball stadium. Seven down, 23 to go!
2. Ride coast to coast on a Harley Davidson.
3. Run a marathon.

Do you have any pre-game/pre-event rituals? If so, what are they?
I don't typically have any pre-game rituals. In eighth grade I had a handshake with one of my friends and we did that before we took the field. Other than that, I've never had any rituals.

What is your biggest "pet-peeve"?
When someone takes something large and recyclable and tries to shove it into a small garbage can. The recycling bin is 20 feet away. Stop being lazy and wasting garbage bags.
