Madigan Paces Titans At WIAC Championship

PRESCOTT, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh women's cross country team finished in fifth place at the 2023 WIAC Championships on Saturday (Oct. 28) at Prescott High School, hosted by UW-River Falls.

UW-Oshkosh, 16-time WIAC champions, totaled 120 points for its fifth-place finish. The Titans had a third-place finish in the 2022 and 2021 championships.

Cyna Madigan (Jr. • Rosendale) led all Titan competitors by running the 6,000-meter course in 22:39 for a 12th-place finish, which earned her the All-WIAC Second Team honor of her career (She also earned second team in 2021).

Josie Makurat (So. • Fairfax, Va.) earned All-WIAC Honorable Mention with a 19th-place, 23:01 finish.

Libby Geisness (Jr. • Waukesha) placed 25th in 23:18, Gracie Buchinger (Fr. • Kimberly) in 23:36 for a 36th place finish, and Meygan Benzing (Sr. • Juneau) placed 43rd in 23:59 to contribute to the team points.

Carolyn Shula of UW-Eau Claire took home the individual title for running the course in 21:25. Maddie Hannah (21:50) and Katelyn Chadwick (21:53), both of UW-La Crosse, followed in second and third. UW-Stout's Mckayla Felton, UW-Stevens Point's Rachel Krouse, UW-La Crosse's Madelynn McIntyre and UW-La Crosse's Maddy Vantassel followed to fill out the All-WIAC First Team.

UW-La Crosse won the team competition to gain its third straight WIAC Championship title with 29 points. UW-Eau Claire followed in second with 46 points and UW-Whitewater in third with 115 points.

Other Titans  running were: Jamie Catania (So. • Fond du Lac) in 50th at 24:21, following behind in 51st, Zoe Watson (Fr. • Kiel) in 24:23, MacKenzie Dix (So. • Green Bay) placed 58th in 24:48, Gwen Feitl (So. • Wheaton, Ill.) in 24:56 for 61st, Emma Maly (Fr. • Clinton) placed 70th in 25:32, Allison Van Der Wegen (Fr. • Kaukauna) finished in 25:43 for 74th, and Paige Hagner (Jr. • Mukwonago) placing 81st in 26:07.

Dix was also named to the All-Sportsmanship team award at the event.

Titans will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 11 participating in the NCAA Division III North Regional, which will be hosted by UW-Eau Claire at Whitetail Gold Course in Colfax, Wis. The women's race is set to start at noon following the men's race at noon starting at 11 a.m.
