Lohrenz Third, Titans Fifth At NCAA North Regional

Hannah Lohrenz and Alexandria Demco ran to top 10 finishes as UW-Oshkosh placed fifth at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Women's Cross Country North Regional Saturday (Nov. 13) at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax.

UW-La Crosse, which won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship at the same venue on Oct. 30, captured Saturday's North Regional team title with 50 points.

UW-Eau Claire finished second to the Eagles in the 32-team meet with 85 points while Carleton College (Minn.) placed third with 91, St. Olaf College (Minn.) fourth with 124 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 178.

Rounding out the top 10 teams were sixth-place UW-Stevens Point with 210 points, seventh-place College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) with 233, eighth-place UW-Stout with 250, ninth-place Gustavus Adolphus College with 287 and 10th-place Bethel University (Minn.) with 298.

UW-La Crosse entered the regional ranked eighth nationally by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association while UW-Eau Claire was 18th, St. Olaf College 19th, Carleton College 20th, UW-Oshkosh 32nd and UW-Stevens Point 35th.

UW-La Crosse's North Regional victory qualified the Eagles for next Saturday's (Nov. 20) Division III Championship at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The remainder of the 32-team field (nine regional champions and 22 at-large selections) will be announced Sunday (Nov. 14). 

Lohrenz led UW-Oshkosh in Saturday's race with her third-place finish. The 2021 WIAC champion completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:07.77. She previously finished 19th at the Division III Midwest Regional in 2019, 50th in 2018 and 76th in 2017. Lohrenz qualified for the Division III Championship in 2019 and placed 185th among the meet's 280 runners.

The North Regional was being contested for the first time. Since the early 1980s teams in Minnesota competed at the Central Regional while squads in Wisconsin participated at the Midwest Regional.

Demco crossed the finish line for the Titans with a 10th-place time of 22:28.76. She was an 87th-place finished at the 2019 Midwest Regional.

In addition to Lohrenz and Demco, UW-Oshkosh's Amelia Lehman also earned All-North Region honors from Saturday's race. Lehman finished 35th with a time of 23:03.20.

The top 35 individual finishers from the North Regional received all-region status.

Rounding out the Titans' seven-person lineup on Saturday were Cyna Madigan, Meygan Benzing, Tricia Cich and Sydney Fricke.

Madigan finished 45th with a time of 23:14.14 while Benzing placed 85th in 24:03.02, Cich 123rd in 24:47.81 and Fricke 154th in 25:25.87.

College of Saint Benedict's Fiona Smith outran 225 other runners in the race with her winning time of 20:57.24. Clara Mayfield of Carleton College finished second to Smith with her time of 21:24.45 while Lohrenz placed third, Emma Maloody of UW-La Crosse fourth in 22:20.67 and Carolyn Shult of UW-Eau Claire fifth in 22:21.88.

Individually, the top seven finishers from each of the 10 regions not on one of the team qualifiers will also earn an invitation to the Division III championship. Those selections will also be announced Sunday.
