Moore's Victory Helps Titans Finish Second At WIAC Championship

Cheyenne Moore ran to the individual title as UW-Oshkosh finished second at the WIAC Women's Cross Country Championship (Presented by Culver's) held Saturday (Oct. 29) at the Wisconsin River Golf Club in Stevens Point.

Moore, who finished 15th at the 2014 WIAC Championship and 45th in 2015, won this year's 6,000-meter race with a time of 21:50. She joins former UW-Oshkosh runners Cheryl Niederberger (1987-88), Cathy Vandermar (1989), Laura Horejs (1990-91), Natalie Goetsch (1992), Tiffany (Speckman) Ebensperger (1994, 1996-97), Liz Woodworth (2003-04), Ayla Mitchell (2009) and Christy Cazzola (2010-12) as a first-place finisher at the league championship.

UW-La Crosse scored 26 points to capture its third WIAC title in four years and ninth overall. The Eagles swept the next three individual listings following Moore as Sadie Kroll finished second with a time of 21:56, Elizabeth Frick third in 22:01 and Kaitlyn McDaniel fourth in 22:04.

UW-Oshkosh, which won its conference-leading 16th title a year ago, placed second at this year's championship with 55 points. UW-Eau Claire took third in the eight-team meet with 61 points while UW-Stout was fourth with 122, UW-River Falls fifth with 150, UW-Platteville sixth with 155, UW-Stevens Point seventh with 175 and UW-Whitewater eighth with 238.

Helping Moore compile UW-Oshkosh's team score were Kristen Linzmeier, Erica Munyan, Michelle Draxler and Leah Rendflesh. Linzmeier finished sixth with a time of 22:09 while Munyan placed eighth in 22:15, Draxler 20th in 22:58 and Rendflesh 23rd in 23:02. Munyan finished 13th, Rendflesh 15th and Linzmeier 39th at last year's championship.

The Titans had seven other runners in the meet, including Ashton Keene who finished 26th with a time of 23:06 and Jessica Stamn who placed 52nd in 24:07. UW-Oshkosh's Cammy Garvelink ranked 58th in 24:37, Hannah Thorn 73rd in 25:29, Amanda Van Den Plas 77th in 25:42, Breanna Van Den Plas 81st in 26:09 and Ashlyn Schwind 85th in 26:15.

UW-Eau Claire's Morgan Marek finished fifth among the meet's 90 runners with a time of 22:05.

The top seven runners in the meet received All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eight through 14 earned All-WIAC second team accolades. Individuals finishing 15 through 20 claimed honorable mention laurels.

All eight WIAC teams will participate at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Nov. 12 at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne. The regional event will be hosted by UW-Oshkosh. The NCAA Division III Championship will be held Nov. 19 in Louisville, Ky.
