Melton Promoted To Full-Time Assistant Volleyball Coach

Braeden Melton has been elevated to a full-time assistant coach with the women's volleyball program, UW-Oshkosh Director of Athletics Darryl Sims announced Tuesday (Dec. 28).

Melton, who begins his full-time role Jan. 1, spent the previous five years as a part-time assistant coach and most recently the director of volleyball operations since head coach Jon Ellmann took over the program in 2017. Melton will continue to serve as the Titans' director of volleyball operations while assisting with recruiting, social media, middle training, opponent scouting and fundraising.

"A part of our program mission is to provide a level of support for our student-athletes that is second to none," Ellmann said. "To know that Chancellor Leavitt and our administration share that same vision is empowering to say the least. We have big goals and extremely high standards and elevating Braeden in this role will go a long way in providing the absolute best experience possible for everyone in our program. Additionally, Braeden brings with him a diverse set of skills that will help move our entire athletics department in a positive direction."

UW-Oshkosh has compiled a 67-52 record and five straight winning seasons with Melton and Ellmann on the sidelines since 2017. The Titans won 21 matches in 2019 and 20 in 2017 while advancing to the semifinals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament three times.

"I'm absolutely thrilled about the opportunity that has been presented to me to step into a full-time role on the coaching staff of the women's volleyball program," Melton said. "It's a rewarding feeling to have the UW-Oshkosh administration believe in what I can help to provide for our student-athletes on and off the court."

Melton played for the UW-Oshkosh men's club volleyball team and earned his bachelor's degree from UW-Oshkosh in 2017.

"UW-Oshkosh has been considered home for me since 2012 in some capacity," Melton added, "and I'm looking forward to many more years as a Titan. We have big goals as a program, and I already can't wait to cross some of them off our list."

Melton, a Beloit Memorial High School graduate, was an assistant girls volleyball coach at Waupun High School during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He worked with the freshman and junior varsity teams in 2013 and the varsity squad in 2014 when the Warriors compiled a 37-12 record and advanced to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 State Tournament.

After two years at Waupun, Melton joined the Winneconne High School girls volleyball coaching staff for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. His two years as the Wolves' varsity assistant coach featured a conference championship and a berth in the WIAA Division 2 Sectional Final in 2015.

Playing for the UW-Oshkosh men's club volleyball team, Melton earned National Collegiate Volleyball Federation All-America honors as a middle blocker in both 2015 and 2017. He helped the Titans finish second at the national tournament in 2015 and fifth in both 2016 and 2017.

During the summer of 2019, Melton helped launch Spiketown USA, a volleyball club program with satellite locations throughout Wisconsin. Spiketown USA provides club opportunities for underserved areas of the state as well as programming for multi-sport athletes.

Melton lives in Oshkosh with his wife, Katelyn, a former UW-Oshkosh player who received a pair of honorable mention NCAA Division III All-America accolades.
