Eagles Block Titans' Comeback Attempt With Five-Set Victory

UW-La Crosse thwarted a UW-Oshkosh comeback attempt and held on for a 3-2 victory, eking past the Titans in set scores of 25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 22-25, 15-11 during a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's volleyball match Wednesday (Sept. 22) in La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse (12-2, 2-0 WIAC) trailed, 11-8, in the final set before scoring seven unanswered points to secure the win. UW-Oshkosh's Olivia Breunig notched a kill that provided the Titans their 11-8 advantage in Set 5, but the Eagles tallied the last seven points on a kill, a UW-Oshkosh service error and five Titans attack errors.

UW-Oshkosh (7-7, 0-2 WIAC) had won its previous two meetings with UW-La Crosse.

Emma Lawrence led all players with 20 kills for the Eagles, who also received 23 assists and 17 digs from Megan Adams, 16 assists from Jackie Oetterer, and 12 digs from Sophie Quelle. Lawrence, who went into the night ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III with 183 kills, added 10 digs.

Riley Kindt paced the Titans with 12 kills while Breunig had nine terminations and Kate Nottoli seven.

UW-Oshkosh's Kalli Mau dished out 32 assists to go along with three kills and seven digs. Amelia Hust and Abby Fregien scooped up 19 and 15 digs, respectively, for the Titans.

UW-La Crosse held edges of 57-47 in kills, .157 to .127 in hitting percentage and 70-65 in digs. UW-Oshkosh owned advantages of 5-3 in blocks and 4-3 in service aces. The Titans entered Wednesday ranked second nationally with 110 blocks and sixth in the country with 875 digs.

The Eagles overcame a 14-8 deficit to win a first set highlighted by .300 hitting from UW-La Crosse and a .250 rate by UW-Oshkosh. The Eagles then hit .385 during the second frame as UW-La Crosse closed out the set with five consecutive points, including back-to-back kills from Brianne Korducki and Liz Lansink on the final two points.

UW-Oshkosh clawed its way back into the match by holding UW-La Crosse to -.086 hitting in the third set and .075 during the fourth frame. The Titans took the Set 3 lead for good 9-8 following a Mau kill before extending their cushion to 19-12 on a double-block by Breunig and Kindt.

The Titans later knotted the match after going on a 9-3 run for a 14-8 lead in the fourth set on another combination block by Nottoli and Joslyn Wolff. UW-La Crosse fought off four straight set-points to pull within 24-22, but a Breunig termination capped the frame on the ensuing point.

UW-Oshkosh led each point of the fifth set, including at 10-7 on a Nottoli kill, until UW-La Crosse rattled off the final seven points. The Eagles drew even at 11 after an Anna Rossner kill and took the lead for good following the first of four consecutive Titans attack errors.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Stevens Point to play Ripon College on Friday (Sept. 24) to begin play at the two-day UW-Stevens Point Invitational II.
