Titans Never Trail In Sweep Of Foresters

Abby Fregien had five of the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team's season-best 13 service aces as the Titans won their home opener, 3-0, over Lake Forest College (Ill.) to begin the Polito's Classic on Friday (Sept. 10) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (5-2) extended its winning streak to three matches by downing the Foresters in set scores of 25-19, 25-21, 25-16. The Titans, playing the Foresters for the first time since 2011, picked up their eighth consecutive victory against Lake Forest College and improved their record to 13-2 in the series since 1982.

The Titans, who never trailed in the match after knotting the score at 2 during the first set, owned advantages in Friday's meeting of 39-22 in kills, .161 to .051 in hitting percentage, 53-49 in digs and 13-5 in service aces. Lake Forest College (4-3), which suffered its second straight defeat, held a 5-4 edge in blocks.

UW-Oshkosh eclipsed its previous season best of 11 service aces as Emma Kiekhofer added three, Amelia Hust and Kalli Mau two apiece, and Robyn Kirsch one.

Riley Kindt paced the Titans in kills for the fifth time this season, pounding down nine while Courtney Pearson had eight terminations, Brynna Mayer six and Madyson Pearson four.

Kiekhofer and Mau dished out 16 and 13 assists, respectively, in co-piloting the Titans offense. Hust, the current Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, led the squad for the seven match in a row with 11 digs.

Lake Forest College tallied the first two points of the match, but the first of three straight Fregien aces tied the first set at 2, and the Titans led each point the rest of the way.

Clinging to a 21-19 lead in the first set, UW-Oshkosh accounted for each of the final four points of the frame on kills from Courtney Pearson and Carissa Sundholm sandwiched around back-to-back service aces by Fregien.

UW-Oshkosh then bolted out to leads of 8-3 during the second set and 6-0 in the third frame and cruised to the three-set-victory.

The Titans seized control of the second set with five consecutive points for a 22-15 lead. The decisive second-set run featured a Hust service ace and kills from Kindt, Madyson Pearson and Kate Nottoli. UW-Oshkosh's 6-0 blitz to begin the third frame included a Mayer termination ahead of two straight service aces by Mau.

UW-Oshkosh concludes its home opening weekend Saturday (Sept. 11) with matches against Edgewood and Wisconsin Lutheran colleges in Kolf Sports Center.
