Titans Move Closer To WIAC Title
Katelyn Malcheski had a match-high 11 kills as UW-Oshkosh remained in contention for the WIAC women's volleyball title with a 3-0 victory over UW-River Falls on Friday (Oct. 30) in Kolf Sports Center.
UW-Oshkosh (25-7, 5-1 WIAC), ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, stayed one-half game behind UW-La Crosse (19-8, 6-1 WIAC), which concluded its league schedule by defeating UW-Platteville, 3-0, on Friday. The Titans kept their quest for a league crown alive by ousting the Falcons in set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-20.
UW-Oshkosh wraps up its regular-season slate by hosting UW-Stout on Saturday (Oct. 31). A win by the Titans would give them their 12th WIAC championship and the top seed for the league's postseason tournament.
Malcheski recorded double-digit kills for the 24th time this season as the Titans defeated the Falcons for the fifth straight time.
Lexi Thiel registered 39 assists while piloting the UW-Oshkosh offense, which outhit UW-River Falls, .252 to .066. The Titans also had advantages in kills (40-26), digs (55-45) and blocks (9-5.5).
Nerissa Vogt and Brianna Witter both added eight kills for UW-Oshkosh, which also received six kills and four blocks from Tina Elstner and a match-best 18 digs from Mandy Trautmann. Vogt had four blocks to increase her NCAA Division III-leading total to 151 on the season.
UW-River Falls led for just the first point of the opening set before UW-Oshkosh jumped out to a 13-6 advantage. The Titans tallied six consecutive points to establish set point at 24-14. UW-Oshkosh ended the frame three points later as it limited the Falcons to a -.030 hitting percentage.
The Falcons raced out to an 8-3 lead in the second set and held a 13-10 advantage before UW-Oshkosh notched eight straight points to take an 18-13 lead. A five-point run put the Titans ahead 23-15 and in control of taking a two-set lead.
UW-Oshkosh reclaimed the lead for good in the third frame at 13-12. The Falcons pulled within 20-19, but the Titans scored five of the last six points to improve their season record to 15-0 in three-set matches.
Rebecca Gasper led UW-River Falls with 10 kills while no other Falcon registered more than four. Raven Klein and Lexi Pingel had a team-leading 16 assists and 13 digs, respectively, for the Falcons.
UW-Oshkosh won its last WIAC regular-season title in 2010, when the Titans and UW-Eau Claire shared the championship with 7-1 records.
