Spicer, Pattee Place Fifth At WIAC Championship

Michelle Spicer and Alyssa Pattee finished fifth in their respective singles flights to lead UW-Oshkosh's efforts at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship (Presented by Culver's) held Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 26-27) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Spicer competed at No. 1 singles and concluded the championship with a 1-2 record. The sixth-seeded Spicer lost a 6-4, 6-3 outcome to third-seeded Elaina Fanta of UW-Eau Claire before defeating seventh-seeded Kailey Courteau of UW-River Falls, 6-0, 6-0. Spicer won her fifth-place contest against fourth-seeded Lauren Couves of UW-Stout by scores of 5-7, 6-2, (10-3).

Participating as the seventh seed at No. 2 singles, Pattee finished the championship with a 1-2 record as well. She lost a 6-0, 6-1 decision to second-seeded Tasha Bailey of UW-La Crosse before ousting sixth-seeded Annie Sandry of UW-Stout, 6-4, 4-6 (10-6). Pattee captured her fifth-place competition against fifth-seeded Alexis Budzinski of UW-River Falls by results of 6-3, 6-1.

Spicer and Jenna Nolde teamed for a sixth-place finish at No. 1 doubles. The sixth-seeded UW-Oshkosh tandem lost an 8-1 verdict to third-seeded Autumn Bruno and Olivia Kraft of UW-Whitewater before defeating seventh-seeded Budzinski and Courteau of UW-River Falls, 8-4. Spicer and Nolde lost their fifth-place contest by an 8-1 score to fifth-seeded Couves and Sandry of UW-Stout.

Going winless for the Titans in two contests apiece were Nolde at No. 3 singles, Hannah Stitt at No. 4 singles, Alessandra Rivera at No. 5 singles, Jade Schwichow at No. 6 singles, Pattee and Stitt at No. 2 doubles and Rivera and Schwichow at No. 3 doubles.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 14 points during the team portion of the championship to finish seventh in the league's overall standings with three points.

UW-Whitewater went unbeaten during the league's regular-season dual meet competition and finished first at the WIAC Championship to win the conference's overall title for the 15th consecutive year and 22nd time in school history.

The overall WIAC champion was determined by using a combination of the league's regular-season dual meet standings and the conference's championship finish. The regular-season dual meet rankings accounted for one-third of the criteria while the conference championship finish accounted for the remaining two-thirds.

UW-Whitewater captured first place at the WIAC Championship with 55 points while UW-Eau Claire finished second with 54, UW-La Crosse third with 52, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 35, UW-Stout fifth with 25 and UW-River Falls sixth with 17.

In WIAC dual matches, UW-Whitewater won all six league contests for seven points. UW-Eau Claire finished second with a 5-1 record (6 points) while UW-La Crosse placed third at 4-2 (5 points), UW-Stevens Point fourth at 3-3 (4 points), UW-Stout fifth at 2-4 (3 points), UW-River Falls sixth at 1-5 (2 points) and UW-Oshkosh seventh at 0-6 (1 point).

UW-Whitewater won the overall WIAC title with 21 points while UW-Eau Claire finished second with 18, UW-La Crosse third with 15, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 12, UW-Stout fifth with nine, UW-River Falls sixth with six and UW-Oshkosh seventh with three.

The overall finish at the WIAC Championship advanced UW-Whitewater, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse and UW-Stevens Point to this spring's league team tournament in Whitewater. The winner of that event earns the WIAC's automatic berth into the 2022 NCAA Division III Championship.
