Titans Beaten By Dutchmen, Tommies

The UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team opened a five-match trip to South Carolina with a pair of losses on Monday (March 20) in Hilton Head.

UW-Oshkosh (7-7) lost a 7-2 decision to Union College (N.Y.) before suffering a 9-0 defeat to the University of St. Thomas (Minn.).

The Titans earned both of their team points against Union College (3-4) on victories by Lesley Kutnink and Samantha Koppa in singles play. Kutnink defeated Paige Webster by a 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, (10-5) result in the fourth flight while Koppa ousted Alex Greenberg by a 6-0, 6-0 decision in the fifth. 

Union College captured the top three singles flights as Natalia Pezzuco, Natalia Pronchik and Julianne Loree all recorded wins. Pezzuco beat Bailey Sagen in the first flight, 6-2, 6-0, while Pronchik outscored Alyssa Leffler in the second, 6-1, 6-1. Loree was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Hannah Peters.

The Dutchmen also took the win in the sixth flight as Madeleine Hamparian defeated Monica Micoliczyk, 6-4, 6-2.

Union College swept all three doubles contests, including the second-flight match, where Loree and Pronchik conquered Koppa and Leffer by an 8-2 score.

Pezzuco and Webster won their first-flight match by a 9-7 result over Peters and Sagen while Greenberg and Lisa Hladik took their third-flight contest by a 9-8 (7-5) outcome over Kutnink and Ashlee Polena.

The University of St. Thomas (11-0) overpowered UW-Oshkosh in the nightcap by winning five of the six singles contests in straight sets and outscoring the Titans, 25-10, in doubles play.

The Tommies recorded a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles play as Paige Becher shut out Peters in the third flight while Jessie O'Brien blanked Micoliczyk in the sixth.

Jenna Zimmerman gave University of St. Thomas another easy win with her 6-2, 6-0 victory over Sagen in the first flight.

Other individual winners for the Tommies were Caitlin Bakke in the second flight, Jenna Czarnecki in the fourth and Taylor McLeod in the fifth. Bakke outlasted Leffler, 4-6, 6-0 (10-6), while Czarnecki defeated Kutnink, 7-5, 6-1. McLeod posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Koppa.

In doubles play, the Tommies secured two of their three victories with little trouble as Bakke and Zimmerman defeated Koppa and Leffler by an 8-1 score in the second flight while Audra Hoffman and Lauren Keller ousted Kutnink and Polena by an 8-2 outcome in the third.

Paige and Taylor McLeod won the No. 1 doubles contest with a 9-7 decision over Peters and Sagen.

UW-Oshkosh remains in Hilton Head to play The College of Wooster (Ohio) and St. Olaf College (Minn.) on Tuesday (March 21).
