Two Sixth-Place Efforts Highlight Titans' Season Opener

UW-Oshkosh recorded a pair of sixth-place finishes in doubles play during its season-opening performance at the UW-Whitewater Women's Tennis Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 3).

UW-Whitewater owned the winner in the top two singles flights and the top division of the doubles competition to secure its 10th straight invitational title. The event consisted of eight teams competing in three flights of both singles and doubles play.

UW-Whitewater scored 48 points to easily outdistance the 31 of runner-up Augustana College (Ill.). UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse shared third place with 30 points, while Carthage College finished fifth with 29, Illinois Wesleyan University sixth with 22, Grinnell College (Iowa) seventh with 19 and UW-Oshkosh eighth with 12.

UW-Oshkosh's No. 2 doubles team of Annie Docter and Alyssa Leffler and the No. 3 tandem of Monica Micoliczyk and Ashlee Polena both produced 1-2 records.

Docter and Leffler dropped their opening match, 6-0, 6-0, to Casey Frommer and Kristen Kalinka from Carthage College before bouncing back with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Claudia McGee-Morales and Allie Spontak from Illinois Wesleyan University. In the fifth-place match, Docter and Leffler lost a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Bailey Budnik and Brooke Volpone from UW-Eau Claire.

Micoliczyk and Polena suffered a 6-1, 6-0 setback in their first match against Brittany Goebel and Madeline Slicker from UW-Whitewater. The UW-Oshkosh duo responded with a 7-7 (9), 5-7, 10-8 victory over Grinnell College's Shannon Hautzinger and Rachel Tappe, but lost their fifth-place contest by a score of 6-0, 6-1 to UW-La Crosse's Shira Busch and Kim Drangeid.

Placing seventh for UW-Oshkosh with 1-2 records were Bailey Sagen and Paige Ganser at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Finishing in eighth place for the Titans with 0-3 records were Frances Witt at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Samantha Koppa and Hannah Peters.

Individual winners were UW-Whitewater's Gabi Mitchell and Jillian Wallace in the first and second flights, respectively, and UW-Eau Claire's Kendra Barry in the third.

The doubles winners were UW-Whitewater's Megan Humphries and Bridgid McGuire in the first flight, and Carthage College's Frommer and Kalinka in the second, and Eliza Barter and Natalie Favia in the third.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Ripon College for a dual match on Tuesday (Sept. 6).
