Titans Suffer First WIAC Loss

Eight-time defending WIAC champion UW-Whitewater lost only five games in doubles play and just 11 in singles action as it defeated the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team, 9-0, on Tuesday (Oct. 6) in Whitewater.

UW-Whitewater (8-0, 4-0 WIAC) took a 3-0 advantage in the team scoring by sweeping the doubles competition. The Warhawk victories included an 8-0 triumph by Megan Humphries and Bridgid McGuire over Paige Ganser and Bailey Sagen in the first flight.

Brittany Goebel and Rachel Siemon gave UW-Whitewater an 8-2 win over Paige Kloth and Hannah Nauth at No. 3 doubles, while Ashley Miller and Alexandra Talyansky gave the Warhawks an 8-3 victory over Sophie Pitz and Shauna Stoffregen in the No. 2 position.

UW-Oshkosh (2-4, 2-1 WIAC) was swept in the singles matches, but won four games in both the fourth and sixth flights. Stoffregen lost a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Miller at No. 4 singles, while Kloth lost a 6-2, 6-2 verdict to Emily Soderman in the sixth slot.

UW-Whitewater was perfect in a pair of singles contests as Jillian Wallace defeated Ganser and Goebel ousted Ashlee Polena by 6-0, 6-0 scores in the second and fifth flights, respectively.

The Warhawks also received individual wins from Gabi Kitchell in the first flight and Alicia Beck in the third. Kitchell won her match by a 6-1, 6-0 score over Sagan, while Beck took her contest by a 6-0, 6-2 result over Pitz.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it visits UW-La Crosse on Oct. 15.
