Titans Victorious In WIAC Debut

UW-Oshkosh took a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition and held on to defeat UW-Stevens Point, 5-4, in a women's tennis match held Saturday (Sept. 19) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.

The Titans took the early advantage in their WIAC opener on wins by Paige Ganser and Bailey Sagen in the first and Sophie Pitz and Shauna Stoffregen in the second flights of doubles play. Ganser and Sagen defeated Emily Kleist and Nicole Thorson, 9-8 (5), while Pitz and Stoffregen ousted Abbey Johnson and Jordan Tyjeski, 8-2.

UW-Stevens Point (3-2, 0-1 WIAC) won the No. 3 doubles contest as Kaylee Roberts and Elizabeth Wilichowski edged Paige Kloth and Ashlee Polena, 8-6.

In singles play, UW-Oshkosh (1-1, 1-0 WIAC) owned the winner in the second, third and fourth flights. Ganser had the easiest time of the three Titan victors with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Thorson in the second flight. Pitz won a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Frances Weiss in the third flight while Stoffregen posted a 6-3, 7-6 (6) triumph over Tyjeski in the fourth.

UW-Stevens Point's Kleist recorded the win at No. 1 singles by outlasting Sagen, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The Pointers concluded their list of individual winners with the victories by Wilichowski in the fifth flight and Johnson in the sixth. Wilichowski slipped past Hannah Nauth, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, while Johnson defeated Polena by a pair of 6-1 scores.

UW-Oshkosh built a 5-2 lead in the team scoring before UW-Stevens Point's Kleist and Wilichowski created the final score with their wins in singles play.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Appleton on Sunday (Sept. 20) for dual matches against St. Norbert College and host Lawrence University.
