Titans Control Green Knights In Season Opener

UW-Oshkosh opened its 2011 women's tennis season with a 9-0 victory over St. Norbert College on Friday (Sept. 9) in Ashwaubenon.

UW-Oshkosh, which defeated St. Norbert College for the 14th time in 18 meetings, won four of its six singles contests in straight sets and two of its three doubles bouts in convincing fashion. The victory marked the Titans' 10th straight season-opening dual win.

Emily Bostwick (Sr. • Whitefish Bay) earned a pair of victories for the Titans in the top singles and doubles flights. She ousted Kelly Van Handel by a 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 1 singles and then teamed with Lauren Piotrowski (So. • Greendale) to defeat Nancy Chybowski and Van Handel by an 8-3 result at No. 1 doubles.

Other UW-Oshkosh singles winners in straight sets were Preslee Nolte (Fr. • Warren, N.J.) in the second flight, Brianna Theobald (So. • Manitowoc) in the fourth and Piotrowski in the fifth. Nolte beat Chybowski, 6-4, 6-4, while Theobald trounced Anna Reardon, 6-0, 6-1. Piotrowski posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Maria Slusarek.

Also winning singles contests for the Titans were Morgan Counts (So. • Oshkosh) in the third flight and Valerie Langkau (So. • Oshkosh) in the sixth. Counts went overtime to edge Callie Schroeder, 6-0, 0-6 (10-8), while Langkau worked extra to slip past Ariel Bioniarz, 7-5, 1-6 (10-8).

Remaining doubles winners for UW-Oshkosh were Counts and Preslee in the second flight and Theobald and Megan Etten (So. • Howard) in the third. Counts and Preslee clobbered Slusarek and Laura Michel, 8-2, while Etten and Theobald trimmed Schroeder and Emily Rasmussen, 9-7.
