Titans Suffer A Pair Of Loses At WIAC Team Tournament

UW-Oshkosh lost both its contests and finished fourth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Tennis Team Tournament held Saturday (April 28) at the Four Lakes Athletic Club in Elkhorn.

Third-seeded UW-Oshkosh (8-10) suffered 5-0 losses to second-seeded UW-Eau Claire (17-6) in the semifinal and fourth-seeded UW-La Crosse (20-4) in the third-place match.

Regular-season champion and top-seeded UW-Whitewater (21-4) captured its fourth straight tournament title with a 6-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire in the championship match. The victory earned the Warhawks an automatic bid the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championship.

UW-Eau Claire swept the doubles competition while winning at No. 4 and No. 6 singles against UW-Oshkosh. The four remaining singles contests went unfinished.

In doubles play, the Blugolds received 8-4 wins from Katie Gillman and Taylor Heltne over Emily Bostwick (Sr. • Whitefish Bay) and Lauren Piotrowski (So. • Greendale) in the first flight and Lexi DeMario and Mary Frassetto over Morgan Counts (So. • Oshkosh) and Valerie Langkau (So. • Oshkosh) in the third. Gretchen Bachmeier and Maddie Johnson completed the sweep with a 9-7 triumph over Megan Etten (So. • Howard) and Preslee Nolte (Fr. • Warren, N.J.) in the second flight.

Singles winners for UW-Eau Claire were Johnson in the fourth flight and DeMario in the sixth. Johnson defeated Etten, 6-0, 6-2, while DeMario ousted Erica Van Riper (Fr. • Waukesha), 6-2, 6-4.

Like UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse won all three of its doubles matches against UW-Oshkosh. The Eagles also picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The four remaining singles contests went unfinished.

UW-La Crosse earned a pair of 8-6 wins in doubles action as Olivia Hartwick and Abby Tresedder edged Bostwick and Piotrowski in the first flight, while Jenny Maruyama and Andrea Vivian slipped past Etten and Nolte in the second. Katie Schultz and Lindsay Seccombe trimmed Counts and Langkau by a 9-7 score in the third flight.

In the two singles matches that were completed, Maruyama beat Bostwick, 6-1, 6-3, in the first flight, while Hartwick defeated Nolte, 3-6, 6-2 (10-4), in the second.

Bostwick finished the season with a 12-8 record at No. 1 singles. She also teamed with Piotrowski to post a 13-8 mark at No. 1 doubles.
